Do you wish to spend a few more hours with Edward and Vivian? Star Richard Gere says there might be a way.
Gere spoke to PEOPLE exclusively at City Harvest Presents The 2025 Gala: Carnaval on Wednesday, April 22, at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. And when asked if the beloved 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman could finally be getting a follow-up, Gere, 75, shared his one requirement.
“It all comes down to whether or not there’s a good script,” the actor said.
In the original film, Julia Roberts played Vivian Ward, a sex worker who’s hired by Gere’s Edward Lewis. They end up spending a week together at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, where Vivian wins over some of the snobby world of wealth with her winsome spirit. The pair eventually fall for each other, and seal their devotion as Roxette’s “It Must Have Been Love” plays in the background.

Pretty Woman celebrated its 35th anniversary back in March. The movie is beloved not only for the incredible chemistry between Roberts and Gere, but also for Vivian’s memorable wardrobe. The cast of the film also included Jason Alexander, Héctor Elizondo, Laura San Giacomo and Ralph Bellamy.

The movie was directed by Garry Marshall, who died in 2016 at age 81. Marshall also directed movies like Runaway Bride (which also starred Roberts), The Princess Diaries series and Valentine’s Day.
Back in December, Gere opened up about how the now-iconic film was hard for him to “understand” at first. “I’m so proud of that movie and proud of the work process that we did to create that movie,” he told host Scott Feinberg on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. “And I’m not only proud, I’m thankful for that movie because it allowed me to do a lot of other things too.”

But figuring out Edward gave him a lot of trouble. “There was no character,” Gere said. “So, I read this thing, and I said, ‘It’s not for me.’ ” He thought Edward was “just a suit.” But Marshall promised him they would “find” the character together — and with Roberts.

“We ended up, you know, really trying to find a character there that made sense within the structure and, you know, the essence of what that piece was,” Gere explained. “To make it heartfelt, to make it charming, make it fun, make it sexy, you know? And we all loved each other. Great trust, we had a wonderful time, and we had no idea that it was gonna be what it was.”
Gere’s wife Alejandra and son Homer were also on hand with him at the City Harvest event. He told PEOPLE of the fundraiser for the food rescue organization, “I think it’s one of the most important groups of people in the New York area. The millions of people who are fed by this organization is astonishing, and I’ve seen it grow over the decades, over the years.”
