  • Grand Theft Auto VI is delayed. Developer Rockstar Games now says it will release the highly anticipated video game on May 26, 2026. The game was first announced in February of 2022.

The biggest video game of the year won’t be coming out this year.

Grand Theft Auto VI, which was widely expected to release this fall, has been delayed, the game’s developer announced Friday morning. It is now scheduled to release on May 26, 2026. It’s disappointing news for a fan base that has been eagerly anticipating the next installment of the mammoth franchise since it was announced in February of 2022. The first trailer was released in December 2023.

Developer Rockstar Games has been silent since then, which is standard for the game maker.

“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team,” the developer wrote in a statement. “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

Shares of publisher Take-Two Interactive Software fell 7.5% in early trading Friday on the news.

The predecessor to this title, Grand Theft Auto V, has been the biggest seller of the past 10 years (and the game continues to be a cash generator for publisher Take-Two Interactive Software). Life to date, the game has sold over 210 million copies, generating more than $9.5 billion in worldwide revenue

Part of GTA V’s longevity has been the introduction of an online mode that has been a major revenue driver, helping Take-Two regularly beat earnings estimates.
