White House insiders are buzzing about the possibility of Stephen Miller, President Trump’s top policy and homeland security adviser, replacing Mike Waltz as national security adviser following Thursday’s administration shakeup.
Trump, 78, shifted Waltz, 51, out of leadership at the National Security Council and nominated him to be ambassador to the United Nations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, 53, will serve as national security adviser on an acting basis.
People close to the administration described Miller as a possibility for the post due to his hardline views on immigration — one of Trump’s top domestic and foreign policy priorities.
“He has been instrumental in the deportation effort and he and Rubio are aligned in stopping the cartels and the dictator regimes that they answer to, and he’s probably the only one with the gravitas to actually finish the job,” one source told The Post.
“I think Stephen is beyond brilliant.”
Miller has been a high-visibility presence during Trump’s first 100 days, sparring with reporters on the White House driveway and at the briefing room podium.
“He would be an excellent choice. Not only is he great in policy but he knows how to manage government on a day-to-day basis. And he works well with Rubio, specifically on immigration and terror threat in the western hemisphere,” a second source close to the White House said.
But a third source with knowledge of the administration suggested that the national security adviser position may not suit Miller.
“It’s too much of a full-time job [and] would take away from the things that he actually likes,” this person said.
Miller could not be reached for comment.
Other contenders for the post of national security adviser include White House director of policy planning Michael Anton, who was described by one source as the preference of Vice President JD Vance.
Also reported to be in the running are senior counterterrorism director Sebastian Gorka, special Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and special envoy for special missions Ric Grenell, a former acting director of national intelligence and ambassador to Germany during Trump’s first term.
