When Prince Harry and Meghan stepped back as working royals, one of the conditions on which they forged their independent lives was that they would retain their HRH titles but not use them. Standing for His or Her Royal Highness, the styling is held by senior royals in lieu of their position within the monarchy.
However, there has been much discussion this week after it came to light that Meghan sent a gift to Jamie Kern Lima with a card reading, “With the Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex.” The present and card were shown on camera as part of a podcast interview Meghan gave with the entrepreneur about her life and work.
A source has made it clear that the Sussexes do not use HRH for commercial purposes. None of the products on Meghan’s As Ever range bear this styling, and the gift to Jamie was personal and given more than a year ago. However, that hasn’t stopped Meghan from receiving significant criticism from some over using HRH privately, with some saying it goes against the agreement made when they stepped back when the late Queen was on the throne.
Following what became known as the “Sandringham Summit” in January 2020, Buckingham Palace released a statement outlining the outcome of discussions about Harry and Meghan stepping back as working royals. “The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family,” the statement read.
For their part, the Sussexes explained on their own website, “As agreed and set out in January, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will retain their “HRH” prefix, thereby formally remaining known as His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer actively use their HRH titles as they will no longer be working members of the family as of Spring 2020.”
HRH is typically held by all the monarch’s children and their grandchildren down the male line. It is shared with a spouse on marriage.
