A woman is still “haunted” by the memory of spilling wine on a bride at her wedding.
Singer Morgan Johnston, 29, attended her friends’ wedding with her boyfriend on Saturday, April 26, in Beechgrove, Tennessee. During cocktail hour, Johnston introduced the bride to her plus-one when disaster struck.
“When my boyfriend went in to hug her he accidentally elbowed the glass of red wine I had in my hand and it went completely down the front of my dress,” Johnston tells PEOPLE. “It took me about two seconds to notice that it wasn’t just all over me — the wine had also landed a few spots on her wedding dress.”
A wave of “absolute horror” hit Johnston.
“Getting any amount of wine, big or small, on someone’s wedding dress, on the most important and special day of their lives, is one of my worst nightmares,” she says. “New fear unlocked.”
The musical artist — whose new single “I’m Not Dumb” releases on Friday, May 2 — was “mortified” and her boyfriend “felt horrible.” They began “profusely apologizing” but couldn’t undo the wedding dress stain.
The accident happened “so quickly,” and while Johnston was still trying to “process the reality of what happened,” she also knew she had to move fast to help the bride.
“It was more important to take action and find a way to help her fast and be embarrassed later,” Johnston says. “She was about 5-10 minutes from doing all of her dances for the reception and I was panicking that I might’ve ruined her wedding day.”

The “A Woman” country singer thankfully “got the brunt of the wine,” so the “sweet” bride didn’t have nearly as much wine on her dress as Johnston did. Johnston’s “so glad it was just a few drops” otherwise she doesn’t know what she would’ve done in the situation.
Johnston rushed to get a bridesmaid “as fast as [she] could to help.” Luckily, the bridesmaid was prepared and happened to bring a “Tide to Go Instant Stain Remover” pen and was able to get the small red stains out of the white dress by reception time.
“I can’t even express the relief I felt when she came out with a clean dress,” Johnston recalls. “She came up to me after dinner and we laughed about it after and enjoyed the rest of the evening! I, however, spent the rest of the evening dancing the night away in my red wine drenched dress.”

“Sometimes I have these moments where I’m like, ‘Wow, this would only happen to me,’ ” she says. “And that felt like one of those moments where I had to make fun of myself a little bit to cope with the embarrassment.”
In her video, which now has more than 800,000 views, she held and drank from a glass of red wine while wearing a formal blue dress. She wrote in an onscreen text overlay, “at a wedding. went to hug the bride. someone bumped my arm and I spilled my RED WINE on her wedding dress.”

“thank god it was only a few drops and for the sweet bridesmaid with a tide pen but I STILL won’t sleep ever again for the rest of my life because I am haunted by this moment 🥲,” Johnston wrote in the caption.
Johnston tells PEOPLE that her caption was genuine. With the wedding having taken place only a few days ago, she has “honestly” thought about the accident “at least once every day since it happened.”
She says, “I think I might retire red wine as an option for any future weddings I attend!”
Johnston will be performing at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, on Sunday, June 15.
