Key Points

  • Whoopi Goldberg has balked at yet another The View topic — this time about Meghan Markle.

  • “Are we that boring?” Joy Behar asked. “It’s the subject matter,” Goldberg replied.

  • Goldberg struggled through the topic, telling her cohosts that she “just woke up” when she wanted to speak.

The onslaught of The View‘s soul-sucking Hot Topics chats continues to sap Whoopi Goldberg’s life force on live television. The Ghost actress collapsed over one agonizing point of discussion during Wednesday’s episode.

Instead of Donald Trump, however, this time it was a royal discussion about Meghan Markle, who courted controversy after the Duchess of Sussex reportedly signed a personal gift to a friend with her former title, “HRH,” after she and Prince Harry stepped away from their roles in 2020.

“Damn them!” Goldberg said, exaggerating interest in the discussion, before asking her cohosts to weigh in after noting that the development “reportedly enraged” current royal family members.

“Is it a bad look for Meghan to still refer to herself as a royal?” Goldberg asked her fellow panelists.Sunny Hostin quickly replied, “No, no, it’s not,” before Goldberg cut her off to quip, “Wake me up when you’re done!”

Hostin continued, noting that “the agreement that was made did not remove the title, it restricted the way it was to be used — it was not to be used publicly,” the legal expert said. “She was giving a friend some strawberry jam that she made herself, and she wrote, “HRH, the Duchess of Sussex,” so it was a private gift.”

Markle appeared on the April 28 episode of her friend Jamie Kern Lima’s podcast, where the host revealed an image of the gift with Markle’s signed greeting.

Conservative cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin said she found it “little bit cringe to give a gift to a close friend and sign it, ‘Her Royal Highness,'” but also called the reported reaction “petty” at best.

“Can I ask a really dumb question that I just woke up for?” Goldberg said, rejuvenating herself to add a moment of perspective

“Are we that boring?” comedian Joy Behar asked. “It’s the subject matter,” Goldberg confirmed.

Goldberg said “it’s cringier that her friend aired it publicly,” and said that she thought the matter was as simple as keeping private exchanges private.

With her head held high and apparently cleared from her momentary slumber, Goldberg sent the show to a commercial break, and she remained awake for the remainder of the Hot Topics chats.

Goldberg isn’t the only member of The View family taking a stand against a matter related to Markle. Controversial former cohost Meghan McCain recently went on a tangent about Markle following the release of the first trailer for Markle’s Netflix lifestyle docuseries.

“I cannot stand her. I love people that I can relate to, like every other 40-year-old mom. I don’t want to eat her jam,” McCain said in February. “I don’t know what she’s doing. This is like her ninth rebrand. I actually had to review her show and her podcast, and it was horrible. It was so boring.”

Wednesday’s Hot Topics rejection came just over 24 hours after Goldberg launched Tuesday’s episode by falling back into her chair in exasperation over discussing Trump’s first 100 days in office, as well as his administration’s response to controversial tariffs leading to increases in prices on Amazon products.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
