Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds know they knock us out with every stylish joint appearance, and more often than not, the coordinate their looks to hit us with even more of a wow factor. But not this time.
On Tuesday night, the couple stepped out in New York City’s Tribeca in outfits that were wildly different, and instantly brought to mind the “black cat” versus “golden retriever” TikTok theory—which suggests that the perfect couple has one of both, never two black cats, and never two golden retrievers. A black cat is mysterious, bold, and independent, while a golden retriever is extroverted, loyal, and eager to please.
And while Lively and Reynolds’s 14-year relationship is likely much deeper than a stereotype-triggered TikTok theory, Lively’s inky-black double-leather look was very black cat-coded. And Reynolds’s peppy and preppy fit did lean into the friendly blonde puppy allegations.
The Gossip Girl star wore a long, sleeveless leather top with pleated detailing, over matching wide-leg leather pants. She accessorized with a Chanel crossbody bag with a colorful, geometric pattern, and the same super-spiky metallic heels she wore earlier in the week—a nod to her Another Simple Favor character.
The Deadpool & Wolverine star went the whole other way with his date-night outfit. He wore a knitted white button-up with crisp beige trousers that he folded up at the hems, plus a boxy burgundy jacket, white lace-up sneakers, and his go-to eyeglasses and beaded bracelets.
It works.
