Katie Thurston opened up about the range of emotions she feels since being diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer
The former Bachelorette talked about grieving the version of herself she has lost to the disease
She considers that her diagnosis could be a blessing in disguise but she doesn’t know why
Katie Thurston hopes her stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis might be a blessing in disguise.
On Monday, April 28, the Bachelorette star posted on her Boobie Broadcast channel, talking about the range of emotions that come with having cancer. “When you have cancer, I think it’s safe to say you’d try just about anything. Today I am almost 24 hours in at my attempt to do a 72-hour water fast,” the 34-year-old began.
“My next scans are officially scheduled for July. I also have a consultation with a radiologist. Idk anything about radiation yet,” she wrote. “Another layer of this deep dive on cancer. I’ve slowly become a pro at a topic I never wanted to know about. Jargon I never used before. I’ve started reevaluating my dreams and goals lately. With limited energy, you start to wonder what things are worth the effort vs. not.”
“Someone told me ‘it’s ok to grieve the version of you that was lost due to cancer’ and that hit me,” she continued. “Who I was will never feel the same. But who I am becoming may be even better than I expected. It might sound crazy but yesterday I wondered if cancer was a gift. A blessing in disguise. I think it will be. What that means though, I’m still discovering.”

Earlier this month, Thurston appeared on Uncomfortable Conversations with Emmanuel Acho and broke down in tears discussing the “hardest part” about her breast cancer diagnosis, which she first announced in February.
“I think being alone is the hardest, if I had to pick something,” she admitted. “And that’s why I’m so thankful just to have this online community. [Husband Jeff Arcuri] travels a lot for work, so he’s actually gone for the next couple days. And soon this summer, he’ll be gone internationally.”
Thurston said she “can’t imagine how people do this alone,” adding that there’s something special about getting support from others, especially from those who have been in her exact shoes.
“It’s one thing to hear support from you, and it’s so great and I am appreciative,” the reality star told Acho. “But to hear from another cancer survivor like, ‘I was on that exact regimen 15 years ago’ — that gives me the biggest hope at the end of the day.”
Thurston then started crying as Acho asked if hope is what she needs at the moment. She immediately replied yes. “I think you have to have a reason to live. I think you have to have something that makes you want to see tomorrow,” she said. “And I think without hope, you don’t have that opportunity.”
