Prom season is making a killer entrance in the newest Fear Street movie.

Netflix released the first trailer for Fear Street: Prom Queen on Tuesday, April 29, giving fans a sneak peek at the upcoming ’80s-set slasher based on prolific horror author R.L. Stine’s 1992 book of the same name.

“Welcome back to Shadyside,” reads an official logline for the film. “In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown.”

“But when a gutsy outsider puts herself in the running, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night,” it adds.

India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Chris Klein and Lili Taylor star in Prom Queen, with Ariana Greenblatt and Katherine Waterston.

In the trailer, set to Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” outsider Lori Granger (Fowler) is seen going up against other prom-queen candidates including the school’s vindictive queen bee Tiffany Falconer (Strazza), who has it out for Lori in particular as they vie for the crown.

But Lori has a complicated past — and some tricks of her own up her sleeve — as she shows up to the prom dressed to the nines, before the blood starts spilling.

“It’s Shadyside — when’s it all going to go wrong?” says Lori’s best friend, Megan Rogers (Son).

Of the setting, director and co-writer Matt Palmer told Netflix’s Tudum in a statement, “We’re back in Shadyside and the year is 1988.”

“With Senior Prom just two days away the race for prom queen is already heating up, but when somebody starts slaughtering the prom queen candidates, all hell is set to break loose. Think classic ’80s slasher and all the fun that entails, but with compelling characters, needle drops, dancing and a whole lot more,” he continued.

For Palmer, the town of Shadyside “feels so relevant to our world now; it could really be any present-day blue-collar town in America,” he told the outlet.

“We dig much deeper down into high-school and family life in this installment and find that, again, so many of the challenges that ’80s kids faced still seem to totally resonate today,” he added.

Fear Street: Prom Queen is streaming May 23 on Netflix.
