The youngest son of former Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe has been charged with attempted murder after a gardener was shot and critically wounded at his home in Johannesburg, South Africa. Bellarmine Mugabe, 28, appeared in court alongside his bodyguard Tobias Matonhodze after the shooting, which has dominated headlines in South Africa.
The incident occurred on February 19 at Bellarmine Mugabe‘s home in the exclusive Hyde Park suburb of Johannesburg. The gardener, who was shot in the back, remains in hospital in a critical condition. Bellarmine Mugabe and his bodyguard Tobias Matonhodze were charged under the legal principle of common purpose.
Prosecutor Lufuno Maphiri told the court that the firearm used in the shooting had not been recovered and was believed to have been concealed. The case was postponed until March 3, when a bail application will be heard.
Robert Mugabe, the former Zimbabwe president, died in 2019 aged 95. His family has been involved in several controversies over the years, including an incident in 2017 when his wife Grace Mugabe allegedly assaulted a 20-year-old model with an extension cord in a hotel room.
