Michelle Harris, an American woman, has found a new home in Paris after having a vision of herself living in the city during a spiritual experience in Peru. She has been living in Paris permanently since 2020 and feels “very well looked after” by the local community.
Michelle Harris, an American woman, moved to Paris after having a vision of herself living in the city during a spiritual experience in Peru. She had been feeling unrooted and sad for a long time, but after the experience, she began to see Paris as a place where she could start anew.
Harris had been focused on a corporate career in the pharmaceutical industry, but after suffering three personal losses in a row, she began to reevaluate her life. She decided to quit her job, sell her apartment, and buy a one-way ticket to Asia, where she started voyaging and experimenting with new ways to confront her grief.
She tried ayahuasca, a mind-altering concoction, and had a vision of herself living in Paris. At first, she didn’t believe it would be her fate, but as she continued to travel and explore the world, she found herself drawn to the city. She began to learn French and eventually moved to Paris, where she has been living permanently since 2020.
Life in Paris
Harris has been “so embraced” by the local community and feels “very well looked after.” She loves the custom of lingering over meals and having serious, good conversations. She also appreciates the ideology of liberty in France, which she finds refreshing.
She has adapted easily to life in Paris, despite the challenges of learning a new language. She jokes that she “abuses the French people every day” with her attempts at speaking their language, but she is persevering. She has also started to feel differently about her own rights while living in Paris, particularly with regards to video surveillance and individual freedom.
A Melting Pot
Harris describes the area where she lives, Montmartre, as a “melting pot” of different cultures and nationalities. She loves seeing people who don’t look like her, don’t talk like her, and don’t do all the things that she does. She feels that this diversity is something that she values about Paris, and it’s something that she also loved about New York.
She has purchased an apartment in Montmartre and has spent time renovating it. She considers the cost of living in Paris affordable compared to New York, although she acknowledges that many people find it expensive.
Harris has written a book, “Lovers & Boyfriends,” about her experiences in the City of Love. She was previously on a long-stay visa but switched last year to a Pluriannuelle Titre de Séjour — Artists Visa, or “passeport talent.”
Looking back on her travels, Harris says she was constantly asking herself, “Am I where I’m supposed to be?” In Paris, the answer is “Yes.” She doesn’t think she could live anywhere else, although she concedes that perhaps London could be a possibility. But for now, she’s very happy where she is.
