Jets’ OC Search Heats Up with Star-Studded Candidate List, Including Frank Reich
SHARE

The Jets have cast a wide net for their next offensive coordinator, interviewing five candidates including the high-profile Frank Reich. This aggressive search comes on the heels of parting ways with Tanner Engstrand and hiring a new defensive coordinator, marking a clear and decisive effort from Coach Aaron Glenn to reshape the entire offensive identity of the team.

The New York Jets’ search for a new offensive coordinator is officially underway in a major way. The team has completed video interviews with five candidates, signaling a swift and decisive effort to find a leader for an offense that ranked dead last in the NFL in passing yards last season. This move comes just days after the Jets and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand agreed to part ways, following the hiring of defensive coordinator Brian Duker.

The list of candidates is a who’s who of offensive minds, headlined by Frank Reich. The 64-year-old former NFL head coach and current Stanford adviser brings a wealth of experience and a championship pedigree to the table. Reich’s NFL journey includes a 40-33-1 record as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and a Super Bowl victory as the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017. However, his recent head coaching tenures with the Colts and Panthers ended with a combined record of 5-18, leaving questions about his ability to adapt his schemes to modern NFL defenses.

Joining Reich is a mix of established coordinators and rising stars. Darrell Bevell, the Dolphins’ quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator, has a long history as an offensive coordinator in the league, with stops in Minnesota, Seattle, and Jacksonville. He was also part of the coaching staff for the Seahawks’ Super Bowl-winning team in 2013. Ronald Curry, a former NFL wide receiver, has quickly climbed the coaching ranks and has a direct connection to Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, having worked together for five years on the New Orleans Saints staff.

The Jets are also looking at Greg Roman, a veteran offensive coordinator known for his innovative and physical schemes. Roman has been the OC for four different NFL teams—the 49ers, Bills, Ravens, and most recently the Chargers. He was named the AP Assistant Coach of the Year in 2019 for his work with the Ravens. The Mandate: Overhaul a Failing Offense

This isn’t just a coaching search; it’s a franchise-altering decision. The new offensive coordinator will inherit a unit that was one of the worst in the league in 2025. The Jets finished last in the NFL in passing yards and were 29th in both total yards per game and points per game. This offensive ineptitude was a primary reason for the team’s 3-14 record and the subsequent firing of head coach Robert Saleh and his staff.

The new leader will have to design a system that can develop Garrett Wilson and Malik Nabers, the team’s dynamic young wide receivers, into true game-changers. They will also need to find a long-term answer at quarterback. After Justin Fields was benched after nine games, the Jets are expected to be aggressive in free agency to sign a veteran signal-caller and could target a potential franchise QB with one of their top picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.

What This Means for the Jets’ Future

The speed and scale of this search demonstrate a clear mandate from new general manager Joe Douglas and head coach Aaron Glenn: build a modern, explosive offense to complement a talented defense. The choice of offensive coordinator will set the tone for the team’s draft strategy, free agency targets, and ultimately, its ability to compete in a tough AFC East.

Will they go with the proven veteran in Reich or Roman, betting on their experience to turn things around quickly? Or will they opt for the younger, more innovative mind in Bevell or Curry, hoping to find a fresh voice that can out-scheme opposing defenses? The decision will be one of the most critical in shaping the Jets’ immediate future, and the pressure is on Glenn to find the right fit for his vision of a championship-caliber team.

The Jets are at a crossroads, and their next offensive coordinator could very well be the architect of their return to relevance or the final piece in a prolonged rebuild. The clock is ticking, and the pressure is on to make the right call.
