In a candid podcast appearance, comedian John Mulaney shared that he has become a significant financial supporter of his wife Olivia Munn’s large Vietnamese family, a role he finds deeply fulfilling and a stark contrast to his own upbringing.
John Mulaney appreciates the opportunity to care for his wife Olivia Munn’s family.
“So Olivia has a large—she’s Vietnamese, and she has a large Vietnamese family in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, of which I am one of the significant financial contributors,” the comedian, 43, shared during the Monday, January 26, episode of Mike Birbiglia’s “Working It Out” podcast. “For the first 39 years of my life, I supported zero Vietnamese people—probably none—and now I have 10 on the books.”
Mulaney revealed that he enjoys helping Munn’s family—who immigrated to the United States from Vietnam—especially since his own lawyer parents never required financial assistance from him.
“With parents of some success, you can’t really do anything for them,” he explained. “And it brings me great joy to help out, to help and do fun things for Olivia’s family.”
Birbiglia, 47, then questioned how Mulaney’s financial contributions to Munn’s family have impacted his dynamic with his in-laws.
“Are you thinking that when you’re having a nice relationship with them, that in the back of their mind they’re thinking: I wonder if he’ll send me $1,000?” Birbiglia quipped.
Mulaney retorted that Munn’s relatives are much more direct with their line of thinking on the matter.
“There’s no wonder. In the back of the mind? You mean the front of the voice? The front of the voice—the words coming out of their mouth?” he joked, adding “how refreshing” it is to be in a “white family [and] never talk about money.”
Birbiglia chimed in, “Olivia’s family says, ‘How much money do you have?’…I actually like that.”
Mulaney then divulged that his in-laws are well aware of the state of his finances.
“Yeah, I tell them, they love it,” he said. “They couldn’t like it more.”
This candid exchange highlights the cultural differences Mulaney has embraced since marrying Munn in July 2024. The couple are parents of son Malcolm, 4, and daughter Méi, 16 months.
Olivia previously opened up about Mulaney’s close bond with her mom, Kim Munn, describing the two as “besties” who hang out “all of the time.”
“John has a list—an actual notepad—of Korean dramas and movies to watch with her, and he checks them off,” she shared during an April 2025 appearance on Today With Jenna and Friends. “They love it.”
In December 2024, Mulaney revealed that Kim had taken up residence with him, Olivia and their kids.
“She’s been living with us in California,” he said on Late Night With Seth Meyers. “I’m not sure how long that’s going to last and—or why it’s happening, really.”
For fans of Mulaney, this new chapter reveals a more personal and grounded side to the comedian, showing a deep integration into his wife’s family and culture. His willingness to embrace this role, both financially and personally, marks a significant evolution in his life story, moving beyond the stage persona to reveal a dedicated husband and family man.
