American Idol Season 24 premieres with a powerful dedication to music supervisor Robin Kaye, honoring the beloved figure whose life was tragically cut short in a July 2025 murder.

When American Idol premieres its ninth season on ABC tonight (Season 24 overall), it begins with a deeply personal dedication to former music supervisor Robin Kaye. The singing competition, a staple of American television, is taking a moment to mourn the loss of a key member of its family. Kaye and her husband, Tom DeLuca, were allegedly murdered in their Encino home in July 2025, a shocking event that sent ripples through the entertainment community.

In her honor, the opening title card for the series reads:

“Season 24 of American Idol:

Dedicated to Robin Kaye

‘We’ll save you a seat.’”

This simple, poignant message encapsulates the profound sense of loss felt by the show’s cast, crew, and viewers. Here’s everything to know about Robin Kaye, and why American Idol decided to honor her in such a meaningful way.

Who Was Robin Kaye?

Kaye was not just a name in the credits; she was a vital force behind the music on American Idol. As the show’s music supervisor, she was responsible for the monumental task of securing licensing for every song performed by the contestants. This role is far more complex than it appears, involving negotiations with record labels, publishers, and even notoriously difficult artists to ensure the show’s musical integrity.

After a successful career at major record labels, including MTM, MCA, and PolyGram, Kaye began working on American Idol in 2009. Over her tenure, she was credited with more than 300 episodes, becoming a trusted and respected figure. She was instrumental in securing some of the show’s most memorable musical moments. In an interview, she shared the story of how she convinced Led Zeppelin to allow a cover of “Whole Lotta Love” to be performed by Adam Lambert on Season 8, a landmark achievement.

“I said, ‘This is the time to consider it. If you’re ever going to try it, this is the time.’ I don’t know if Robert Plant knew, but his manager did because his kids were big Adam fans. They watched the show in England,” she explained, highlighting her unique ability to connect with artists on a personal level.

The Investigation and Suspect

The murders of Robin Kaye and Tom DeLuca were investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department. Their investigation concluded that the killings appeared to be random, meaning the couple was not specifically targeted. The tragedy began when 22-year-old Raymond Boodarian allegedly entered their home through an unlocked door while they were out. A “violent struggle” ensued when they returned home, during which they were killed with their own gun.

Raymond Boodarian was charged with two counts of murder and one count of residential burglary shortly after the killings. However, in November 2025, he was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial and ordered to be committed to a state hospital, as reported by ABC7. In December, a judge confirmed that the defendant lacked the capacity to make decisions regarding psychotropic medication, solidifying the commitment order.

American Idol’s Response and Tributes

Back in July 2025, at the time of the murders, American Idol issued an official statement that spoke volumes about Kaye’s importance to the show: “We are devastated to hear of Robin and her dear husband Tom’s passing. Robin has been a cornerstone of the Idol family since 2009 and was truly loved and respected by all who came in contact with her. Robin will remain in our hearts forever and we share our deepest sympathy with her family and friends during this difficult time.”

The sentiment was echoed by the artists she worked with. Danny Gokey, a Season 8 finalist, shared his memories with The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “Most of our interactions were about the songs I wanted to sing on the show. She was always really sweet, accommodating and humble. She always tried her best to get the songs that we wanted to sing cleared, but if she got a ‘no,’ she would work quickly to find alternatives for us. I’m shocked by her passing. It is a tragic loss for the entire Idol family.”

The dedication in the Season 24 premiere is a continuation of this outpouring of grief and respect, transforming a tragedy into a lasting tribute that ensures Robin Kaye’s legacy is forever intertwined with the show she helped shape. Her memory will now be part of the opening moments of each episode, a constant reminder of her invaluable contribution to the world of television music. American Idol returns Monday, Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, with her spirit undoubtedly present in every note sung.
