A masked gunman opened fire inside a Brooklyn deli Friday afternoon, wounding two men before fleeing. The United Bodegas Association has posted a $5,000 reward as the NYPD searches for the suspect and investigates the motive behind the brazen attack.

The shooting occurred around 3:47 p.m. at Alex Deli & Grocery, located at 1256 Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. A 24-year-old man was shot in the face, while a 26-year-old was struck in the back. Both victims were transported to Kings County Hospital and are listed in stable condition.

The suspect, described as a man wearing a black puffer jacket, ski mask, ripped navy jeans, and black and white sneakers, fled westbound on Newkirk Avenue. As of Saturday morning, no arrests have been made, and the NYPD has not determined a motive for the shooting.

The United Bodegas Association Steps In

In response to the shooting, the United Bodegas Association condemned the violence and announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman. Fernando Mateo, a spokesperson for the association, emphasized the need for increased security measures for bodega owners and workers.

“We are sending a clear message to Mayor Mamdani and Governor Hochul,” Mateo said. “We need funding for panic buttons and real security measures. Our members cannot do this alone. The City and the State must step up to protect the men and women who own and operate these bodegas.”

A Pattern of Violence Against Bodegas

This incident is part of a troubling trend of violence targeting bodegas and small businesses in New York City. In recent years, bodega workers have faced robberies, assaults, and even fatal shootings. The United Bodegas Association has repeatedly called for stronger protections, including panic buttons and increased police patrols in high-risk areas.

The NYPD has not yet confirmed whether the victims were employees or customers of the deli. However, the shooting has reignited concerns about the safety of workers in these establishments, which often operate late into the night and handle cash transactions.

Community and Police Response

The NYPD is actively investigating the shooting, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses. The department has urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in solving the case.

Local residents have expressed shock and concern over the incident. “This is a quiet neighborhood,” said one nearby shop owner. “We’re all worried about what this means for the safety of our businesses and customers.”

Why This Matters

This shooting underscores the ongoing challenges faced by small businesses in New York City, particularly in neighborhoods where crime rates remain a concern. The United Bodegas Association’s call for action highlights the need for systemic solutions to protect workers and customers alike.

As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those who keep these essential businesses running. The $5,000 reward reflects the urgency of bringing the gunman to justice and preventing future attacks.
