Why Titans Star Jeffery Simmons Believes Cam Ward Is the Key to Tennessee’s Bright Future

Titans star Jeffery Simmons reflects on his fourth Pro Bowl season, his Walter Payton Man of the Year nomination, and why rookie QB Cam Ward is the foundation of Tennessee’s promising future.

In a season that didn’t go as planned for the Tennessee Titans, defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons has been a rare constant. The 2025 campaign marked his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl selection, a testament to his elite play on the interior defensive line. But beyond the individual accolades, Simmons remains focused on the bigger picture—especially the future of the franchise, which he believes is in good hands with rookie quarterback Cam Ward.

A Season of Highs and Lows

Simmons, a team-first player, acknowledged the disappointment of the Titans’ 2025 season. Despite high expectations coming out of training camp, the team struggled to translate effort into wins. “The record don’t show that, but when you turn on the tape, you’re like, man, these guys played hard, they played together,” Simmons said. His personal success—a career-high in sacks—was bittersweet, as he emphasized the need for consistency moving forward.

One of the few bright spots? The emergence of Cam Ward, the rookie quarterback who took over the offense with poise and competitiveness. Simmons highlighted Ward’s leadership, noting his ability to extend plays and make clutch throws. “He’s competitive as hell,” Simmons said. “You see him on Sundays, and you understand why he was a top pick.”

The Walter Payton Man of the Year Nomination

For the third straight year, Simmons has been nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, recognizing his impact off the field. His foundation focuses on youth development, aiming to provide guidance and opportunities for young people in Tennessee and his home state of Mississippi. “I don’t do the things I do in the community for that award,” Simmons said. “But to bring that trophy to Nashville would mean the world.”

His commitment to mentorship stems from personal experience. After a break-in at his home, Simmons reflected on the importance of reaching at-risk youth. “What if somebody with our platform could have touched one of them kids to just pull them out the street?” he asked. His work is a reminder that football is just one part of his legacy.

Looking Ahead: Why Ward Matters

While the Titans’ 2025 season fell short of expectations, Simmons sees Ward as a cornerstone for the future. The rookie’s ability to protect the football—throwing fewer interceptions than many veteran quarterbacks in their first year—has impressed teammates and analysts alike. “He’s got that attitude, that will to win,” Simmons said. “That’s what excites you.”

As Tennessee prepares for the offseason, Simmons’ leadership and Ward’s potential provide a blueprint for success. The Titans may not have made the playoffs in 2025, but with Simmons anchoring the defense and Ward developing under center, the foundation for a resurgence is already in place.
