“John called me and said, ‘I think I have a gig for you. I can’t tell you over the phone. Can you come to my studio tomorrow?’” Phil X remembered. “It was like a total Mission: Impossible: ‘If you choose to accept this mission…’ [laughs] He goes, ‘How do you feel about filling in for Richie Sambora in Bon Jovi?’”
The First Gig: A Baptism by Fire
Phil X’s first official gig with Bon Jovi was at the New Orleans Jazz Fest in front of 50,000 people. “No pressure, right?” he joked. He went on to play 13 shows with the band before Sambora returned. However, his journey was far from over.
In 2013, Phil X received a call from Jon Bon Jovi while he was in Trader Joe’s. “Hey, we’re gonna need you in Calgary tonight. The road manager is gonna call you,” Jon said. Phil X was given just one day to learn three new songs for the show.
After 11 more shows together, Phil X learned that Richie Sambora wasn’t coming back, and he would be needed in Europe immediately for a tour. This meant learning 25 more songs in a short amount of time.

“I never had a day off for months when I went to Europe because I had to learn a song or two every day off. It was crazy,” Phil X said. “But I’ve been there ever since, so there’s that.
