Tony Dokoupil, the new anchor of CBS Evening News, had an emotional moment during his second night on the job, reflecting on his childhood in Miami and the impact of his father’s incarceration.

Tony Dokoupil, the new anchor of CBS Evening News, had an emotional moment during his second night on the job. Reporting from Miami, the city where he grew up, Dokoupil reflected on his childhood and the impact of his father’s incarceration, which led to his family leaving the city.

Dokoupil’s emotional moment came as part of the program’s Live From America Tour, a series of broadcasts that will take him and the show to cities around the country. The moment was a raw and personal reflection on his past, which he shared with viewers live on air.

The Emotional Moment

During the broadcast, Dokoupil confessed that being back in Miami stirred deep feelings. “It makes me emotional, it’s so funny,” he said, pausing as his voice cracked. “You only have one childhood, right? Florida is where I grew up. We didn’t get a lot of sleep, so … my grandmother’s here, my father, my mother, my aunts and uncles, cousins, and it’s where I would have spent all of my childhood.”

He continued, “But we left because my father got in some trouble with business. We laugh about it now, but he was a drug dealer and he went to jail.”

The former CBS Mornings host went on to explain why the return hit him so hard. “The reason it’s so emotional for me is because I feel like I was robbed of the full Miami experience,” Dokoupil said. “People are gonna think this is so crazy, but this should have been my home for the whole stretch. To have it and then to lose it, it just kind of rocks me. I didn’t expect to feel that, but whenever I’m here, it really does feel deeply like home and I wish I could stay at home.”

The Context

Dokoupil’s emotional moment came just one night after his first broadcast as anchor, which included a brief but noticeable hiccup. A teleprompter issue threw off a transition, and he acknowledged it in real time, quipping, “First day! First day, big problems here,” before moving on. The clip made the rounds online after the live airing, though the moment was later edited out of the episode when it was posted to CBS’ digital platforms.

Dokoupil’s emotional moment is a reminder of the personal connections that anchors and reporters have to the stories they cover. It also highlights the importance of acknowledging and reflecting on one’s past, even in a professional setting.

The Impact

Dokoupil’s emotional moment has resonated with viewers, who have taken to social media to express their support and appreciation for his honesty and vulnerability. The moment has also sparked conversations about the importance of acknowledging and reflecting on one’s past, even in a professional setting.
