A parachutist landed behind the end zone and onto field-side stands before the Armed Forces Bowl between Rice and Texas State — no injuries reported — marking a second such incident this bowl season.

Before kickoff at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, two parachutists were scheduled to make dramatic entries ahead of the Armed Forces Bowl matchup between Rice football and Texas State. One landed outside the stadium perimeter, while the other — captured vividly in video — touched down directly behind the end zone on the field’s sideline area separating spectators from play. No injuries occurred among those on the ground.

A spokesperson for the event confirmed to USA TODAY Sports that the parachutist immediately got up and exited the field independently without assistance, and all ground personnel were unharmed.

This isn’t an isolated occurrence. The same bowl season already saw another parachutist miss the mark entirely — landing in Paterson Field, a baseball complex located north of the Salute to Veterans Bowl site in Montgomery, Alabama, according to reporting by the Gadsden Times, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The Armed Forces Bowl continues with Texas State currently leading Rice 34-7 in the fourth quarter at the time of reporting. The game remains on track despite the aerial mishap.

While the parachute drop was intended as a patriotic spectacle honoring military service, its execution has been less than flawless — raising questions about coordination, safety protocols, and whether these events are worth the risk given their potential for disruption.

Such incidents may also spark fan speculation: Is this becoming a trend? Could next year’s paratrooper entry be even more carefully choreographed? Or perhaps it’s time to rethink the entire tradition altogether?

For now, the focus remains squarely on the gridiron. Texas State’s commanding lead suggests they’re poised to pull away — but will the crowd’s attention shift toward the sky after witnessing yet another airborne misstep?
