Tom Parker Bowles, son of Queen Camilla, humorously dismissed the idea of becoming a prince, calling it the “quickest way to revolution.” His candid remarks on the Good Food podcast highlight his preference for a life outside the royal spotlight.

Why Tom Parker Bowles Doesn’t Want to Be a Prince

Tom Parker Bowles, the son of Queen Camilla, has made it clear that he has no interest in acquiring a royal title. During a recent appearance on the Good Food podcast, the 51-year-old food writer and restaurant critic humorously dismissed the idea of becoming a prince, calling it the “quickest way to revolution.”

“I’d tell you that would be the quickest way to revolution,” Tom responded when host Samuel Goldsmith suggested he might want to be a prince. “I think we’re fairly balanced and sober and sensible country on the whole, but if I suddenly became prince, I think Buckingham Palace gates would be stormed. It would be appalling. Really, no… I think that would put back the long and glorious cause of the monarchy in Britain by many years, no.”

The Royal Family Dynamics

Tom Parker Bowles is the son of Queen Camilla and her first husband, Andrew Parker Bowles. He and his sister, Laura Lopes, became step-siblings to Prince William and Prince Harry when King Charles and Queen Camilla wed in 2005. Despite their royal connections, Tom and Laura have largely stayed out of the royal spotlight, focusing on their own careers and families.

Tom is a well-known food writer and the restaurant critic for The Mail on Sunday. He has also authored several books, including Cooking and the Crown: Royal Recipes from Queen Victoria to King Charles III, which was published in 2024.

Royal Appearances and Family Life

While Tom and Laura have largely stayed out of the royal spotlight, they have made rare public appearances at significant royal events. They attended Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral in September 2022 and the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla in May 2023. More informally, Queen Camilla often attends social events like horse races or Tom’s book parties with her children.

Tom has spoken fondly of King Charles and Queen Camilla as grandparents to his children, Lola and Freddy. In an exclusive interview with People, he described them as exceptional grandparents, saying, “They adore her. They adore the King, too. He has been a wonderful step-grandfather.”

Why This Matters

Tom Parker Bowles’ remarks highlight the delicate balance between royal tradition and modern sensibilities. His humorous dismissal of the idea of becoming a prince underscores the importance of maintaining a sense of normalcy and relatability within the royal family. It also reflects the broader public sentiment about the monarchy and its role in contemporary society.

For fans of the royal family, Tom’s comments provide a glimpse into the personal dynamics and relationships within the royal household. His close bond with King Charles and Queen Camilla, as well as his role as a father, adds a humanizing touch to the often formal and distant image of the monarchy.
