In a raw and emotional interview, Jillian Lauren-Shriner details the cascade of crises that defined her 2025—a police shooting, a cancer diagnosis, and the collapse of her two-decade marriage to Weezer bassist Scott Shriner—revealing a story of survival and self-reckoning that goes far beyond the headlines.

For the first time since a Los Angeles Police Department officer shot her in the shoulder during a chaotic manhunt, Jillian Lauren-Shriner is telling her side of the story. The incident, which occurred in April 2025 near the Eagle Rock home she shared with her then-husband, Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, was just the beginning of a year of profound personal upheaval that included a cancer diagnosis and the end of her 20-year marriage.

“My world fell to pieces around me in a heartbeat,” Lauren-Shriner told Rolling Stone. “It’s like, you spend your whole life just getting an entire deck of cards in order. And just take them and throw them up in the air one day, and I’m still waiting to see how they’re gonna land.”

The Incident That Changed Everything

The chain of events began on April 8, 2025, when LAPD officers were searching the Shriners’ neighborhood for three suspects who had fled a hit-and-run. Lauren-Shriner, who was armed and in her backyard, was not involved in the initial crime but found herself at the center of the police response.

According to the LAPD, she repeatedly ignored police commands to disarm and fired her weapon at an officer. A responding officer then shot her once in the shoulder. She was transported to a hospital, arrested, and initially booked on an attempted murder charge before being released on a $1 million bond.

In her interview, Lauren-Shriner framed her actions as a moment of panic and self-preservation. “I was doing the best I knew to protect my family,” she said. “[The] impulse was self-defense.”

Ultimately, the attempted murder charge was dropped. Instead, she was charged with the lesser offenses of assault and negligent discharge of a firearm. Court documents reveal she was granted a diversion program focused on mental health treatment instead of jail time.

A Marriage Unraveling Amid Crisis

The shooting incident did not happen in a vacuum. Just one month prior, in March 2025, Lauren-Shriner had announced on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was recovering from two back-to-back surgeries, including a full hysterectomy.

She told Rolling Stone that the police incident created a new “crisis” point in her relationship with Shriner, whom she married in Hawaii in November 2005. The couple shares two sons: Tariku Moon, 17, and Jovanni Starshine, 13.

“I had to go back and work on trauma from a long time ago in order to try and understand myself now, my actions,” she said, adding that she wants to be her “best self” amid the divorce.

In early December, Lauren-Shriner filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.” In the filing, she is seeking joint legal and physical custody of their children, spousal support, and requested that the court’s ability to award Shriner spousal support be terminated. She also asked that her attorney fees be paid and that her last name be restored to Lauren.

“The headlines about the divorce were the ones that really hurt me,” she confessed. “I was the one who served my husband, but still, to see it in the public was really painful. It was definitely a day [spent] under the covers, blocking out all the noise. Divorce is painful, I don’t care who you are.”

Finding a Path Forward Through Writing

A published author, Lauren-Shriner spent her time in jail memorizing the graffiti on the walls. “It gave me a chance to get out of my head for those hours in the jail cell and imagine who else had been there,” she said.

While she initially said she wouldn’t write a book about the experience, she has since changed her mind. “Books are what I do,” she stated, hinting that a literary reckoning with these events may be forthcoming.

Her story is a stark reminder of how quickly a life can unravel and how complex the journey to piece it back together can be. It’s a narrative that moves far beyond the simple facts of a police report or a divorce filing and into the deeply human territory of trauma, survival, and the search for understanding.
