Forget everything you know about the Girl of Steel. House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock is set to redefine the hero in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a ‘hardcore’ space epic that serves as a cornerstone for James Gunn’s new DC Universe. We’re breaking down the cast, the gritty comic book source material, and why this isn’t your typical superhero origin story.

The DC Universe is being reborn, and at the heart of its ambitious new chapter, “Gods and Monsters,” is a hero forged in trauma and loss. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is poised to be far more than just another superhero film; it’s a foundational epic designed to introduce audiences to a very different kind of Kryptonian. With a powerhouse star, a visionary director, and a celebrated comic book as its guide, this film is set to be a defining moment for the new DCU.

The first solo film for Superman’s cousin since the 1984 cult classic, this project adapts the critically acclaimed 2021 comic series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, signaling a mature and tonally distinct direction for the character.

Meet the New Woman of Tomorrow

Leading the charge as Kara Zor-El is Australian actress Milly Alcock, who became a global sensation for her fiery portrayal of the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon. Her casting was officially confirmed on January 29, 2024, ending widespread speculation, a detail first reported by Deadline. Alcock’s ability to convey both fierce strength and deep vulnerability made her a standout for the role.

Milly Alcock, known for ‘House of the Dragon’, will embody a new, grittier Kara Zor-El.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn personally championed her selection, expressing his excitement on social media. “Milly is a fantastic young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU,” Gunn stated. “She embodies Kara as envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Nogueira.”

Alcock steps into a role previously defined on television by Melissa Benoist in the CW’s Supergirl and most recently portrayed on the big screen by Sasha Calle in The Flash. However, the mission here is to present a version of the character audiences have never seen before.

A Hardcore Hero Forged in Tragedy

This will not be the hopeful, sunny Supergirl many fans recognize. James Gunn has been clear about the film’s darker, more complex tone, which is drawn directly from its source material. The story will explore the profound differences between Superman and Supergirl’s upbringings.

“In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life,” Gunn explained in an interview with Deadline. “She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

The comic book plot, detailed by DC Comics, follows a disillusioned Kara Zor-El who, while trying to escape her cousin’s shadow, encounters a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll. Ruthye is on a mission of vengeance against the men who destroyed her world, and she enlists a reluctant Supergirl to help hunt them down across the galaxy. This cosmic road-trip narrative provides the framework for a deep character study of trauma, justice, and finding purpose.

The Creative Team and Key Cast

Behind the camera is director Craig Gillespie, whose work on films like I, Tonya and Cruella demonstrates a talent for balancing dark humor with intense character drama. The screenplay is penned by Ana Nogueira, whom Gunn has praised for delivering a script that was “above and beyond anything I hoped it would be.”

The confirmed cast includes:

  • Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl
  • Eve Ridley as the determined alien, Ruthye Marye Knoll
  • Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills

Additionally, casting announcements from Variety confirmed that David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) and Emily Beecham (Cruella) will star as Supergirl’s Kryptonian parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze. The film is also set to feature Jason Momoa, reportedly playing the formidable anti-hero Lobo.

Release Date and Production Status

Mark your calendars: Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is officially scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026, a release date confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. The film is a major tentpole for the DCU’s inaugural phase.

James Gunn announced that filming began on January 23, 2025, at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. He celebrated the moment with a post on X, praising both Gillespie and Alcock.

Watch the First Explosive Teaser

In December 2025, fans were given their first look at the film with an official teaser trailer. The footage showcases Alcock fully embracing the role, highlighting intense action sequences, glimpses of her cosmic journey, and the raw power of this new Supergirl. The clip culminates with a powerful reveal of the iconic red and blue suit, updated for a new generation.

The trailer firmly establishes the film’s epic scale and gritty tone, promising a superhero adventure unlike any other in the DC canon. It immediately sets Alcock’s version apart as a formidable, battle-hardened warrior.

As a key pillar of the new DC Universe, which officially kicks off with Gunn’s Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow carries the weight of establishing a new tone and direction. It promises to be a complex, emotional, and action-packed exploration of one of DC’s most powerful heroes, finally giving Kara Zor-El the cinematic epic she deserves.
