A bold attempt by the Los Angeles Dodgers to revitalize their struggling offense with a dramatic lineup overhaul fell flat in World Series Game 5, as the Toronto Blue Jays capitalized on a historic performance from rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage to secure a commanding 6-1 victory, putting the defending champions on the verge of elimination.

In a high-stakes World Series Game 5, the Los Angeles Dodgers made significant changes to their batting order in an attempt to jump-start a slumping offense. However, these adjustments yielded little positive effect, as the Toronto Blue Jays delivered a dominant 6-1 win, propelled by an unforgettable outing from their young pitching sensation, Trey Yesavage. This pivotal victory gives the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead in the series, sending them back home with a chance to clinch their first championship since 1993.

Roberts’ Bold Gambit: Reshaping the Lineup

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, facing a team batting a dismal .202 in the series, implemented drastic measures for Game 5. For the first time in four years, eight-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion Mookie Betts was moved down from his customary top-two spot to the No. 3 position. Additionally, outfielder Andy Pages, who had a strong first half but a significant drop-off in the second, was benched in favor of Alex Call.

“Doesn’t feel great,” Roberts commented on his team’s performance, as reported by AP News. “You clearly see (the Blue Jays) finding ways to get hits and move the baseball forward, and we’re not doing a good job of it.” He clarified his decision before the game, stating, “In the postseason, you’ve got to be a little bit more reactive than the regular season. When I netted out the value of what I feel gives us the best chance to win today, that was a decision I made.”

The changes were meant to spark an offense that had managed only four runs in its last 28 innings. The Dodgers entered Game 5 after splitting the first four games, but their lack of offensive production was a glaring concern for the defending champions.

A Star-Studded Lineup Stymied

Despite Roberts’ strategic moves, the Dodgers’ star-studded lineup continued to struggle. They managed only four hits against Trey Yesavage and the Blue Jays bullpen, striking out a staggering 15 times. Every member of the reconfigured starting lineup recorded at least one strikeout. Here’s how some key players fared:

  • Shohei Ohtani: Went 0 for 4 in the leadoff spot, marking his second consecutive hitless game. This was a significant dip after clubbing four extra-base hits and reaching base nine times in the 18-inning Game 3 victory.
  • Will Smith: Moved to Betts’ No. 2 spot, went 1 for 4 with a ninth-inning single.
  • Mookie Betts: In the No. 3 spot, went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. His World Series average dropped to 3 for 23 with no RBIs. Roberts suggested Betts might be “pressing.”
  • Freddie Freeman: The Game 3 hero went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts as the cleanup hitter.
  • Max Muncy and Tommy Edman: Both went 0 for 3.

The only bright spot for the Dodgers was Kiké Hernández, who hit their only extra-base hit—a third-inning homer. His fellow outfielder, Teoscar Hernández, also had two hits.

The Rise of Trey Yesavage: A ‘Hollywood’ Story

Game 5 belonged decisively to the Toronto Blue Jays, spearheaded by an extraordinary performance from rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage. The 22-year-old, who started the 2025 season in Single-A and was called up from Triple-A Buffalo on September 15, delivered a historic outing in only his eighth MLB start and first postseason road start.

Yesavage allowed just one run over seven innings, striking out 12 batters and walking none. His 12 strikeouts set a new record for a rookie pitcher in a World Series game, and he became the first pitcher in World Series history to achieve that many strikeouts with zero walks. “Hollywood,” Yesavage remarked, “couldn’t make it this good.”

Veteran pitcher Chris Bassitt lauded Yesavage’s composure, saying, “He’s just completely composed. The moment’s not too big for him, which is crazy for how young he is.” Even future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer expressed awe, stating, “I couldn’t imagine… ending up in the World Series pitching… he’s for real.”

Dominance from the Outset: Blue Jays’ Early Barrage

The Blue Jays’ dominance began immediately against two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell. Davis Schneider, batting leadoff, smashed Snell’s first-pitch fastball out to left field. On Snell’s third offering of the game, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed suit with another home run. This marked the first time in World Series history a game began with back-to-back blasts, stunning the Dodger Stadium crowd.

Schneider revealed the team’s strategy: “He couldn’t really locate the fastball in Game 1, but he was still throwing that changeup effectively. So we figured he’s going to try to get the fastball over for a strike and then kind of go to his off-speed.”

The Blue Jays extended their lead in the fourth when Daulton Varsho tripled and scored on an Ernie Clement sacrifice fly. They broke the game open in the seventh with a wild sequence that included two wild pitches from Snell, a walk to Guerrero from reliever Edgardo Henriquez, a third wild pitch allowing a run, and an Bo Bichette RBI single, pushing the score to 5-1.

What’s Next for the Dodgers and Blue Jays?

With their 6-1 victory, the Toronto Blue Jays now hold a commanding 3-2 series lead and head back to Rogers Centre for Game 6. Historically, teams taking a 3-2 lead by winning Game 5 on the road have gone on to win the series 20 of 27 times (74.1%). The Dodgers’ repeat bid, which would have made them the first repeat champions since 2000, is now on the brink.

The Dodgers, after failing to make adjustments in back-to-back home losses, will need a monumental shift in momentum and offensive production to keep their championship hopes alive. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, are riding a wave of confidence, fueled by the unexpected heroics of Trey Yesavage, as they eye their first World Series title in decades.
