Step into the past with veteran casting director Judy Blye Wilson as she reveals the precise moment she knew a then-unknown Sarah Michelle Gellar was destined for the complex role of Kendall Hart on ‘All My Children’, a decision that launched Gellar’s illustrious career and solidified her place in pop culture history.

Before she became a household name slaying vampires on prime time, Sarah Michelle Gellar captivated daytime audiences as Kendall Hart, the rebellious daughter of soap opera icon Erica Kane (played by Susan Lucci) on the beloved series ‘All My Children’. Recently, veteran casting director Judy Blye Wilson, the woman responsible for bringing Gellar to Pine Valley, offered a rare glimpse into the pivotal audition that changed everything.

The Audition That Sealed a Star’s Fate

In an interview published by TV Insider on October 16, Judy Blye Wilson reflected on the process of casting the crucial role of Kendall Hart. At just 15 years old, Gellar was among four young actresses who tested for the part, an audition made even more significant by the presence of Susan Lucci herself.

Wilson recalled the young Gellar, noting, “She was a young kid, and she had done a couple of little plays.” However, it was during the test with Lucci that Gellar’s undeniable talent shone through. “There was no question about it. Sarah Michelle was it, period. She really, really nailed that role and continued to do so. She was really phenomenal,” Wilson stated, highlighting the instant connection and powerful performance that set Gellar apart from her peers.

Kendall Hart: A Chip Off the Erica Kane Block

The character of Kendall Hart was ingeniously designed as a younger, wilder counterpart to Erica Kane, created to reflect the very chaos and drama Erica had inflicted on others. This dynamic required an actress who could stand toe-to-toe with the legendary Susan Lucci.

“That relationship was interesting between her and Susan, and they had great chemistry together,” Wilson noted. Gellar’s portrayal of Kendall was so convincing that she earned the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series in 1995, following her second nomination for the role. This critical acclaim came just before she embarked on the iconic role that would define a generation: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The synergy between Gellar and Lucci was not just professional; it extended to personal support. Gellar, then 17, admitted to People in 1994 that she was “shaking” on her first day. It was Lucci, then 78, who provided comfort, reassuring her, “‘Don’t worry, nobody bites.'”

A Star is Born: From Daytime to Global Phenomenon

After her departure from ‘All My Children’ in 1995, Gellar quickly ascended to superstardom. Beginning her run as Buffy Summers in 1997, she became a pop culture icon. Her film career also took off with hits like 1997’s ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ and ‘Scream 2’, 1999’s critically acclaimed ‘Cruel Intentions’, and 2002’s ‘Scooby-Doo’.

The character of Kendall Hart, though indelibly linked to Gellar, returned to ‘All My Children’ in 2002, played by Alicia Minshew, showcasing the enduring impact of Wilson’s original casting.

Judy Blye Wilson’s Legacy: A Keen Eye for Talent

Wilson’s impressive career at ‘All My Children’ was marked by an uncanny ability to spot future talent. Her casting choices were not limited to Gellar alone; she helped unearth a constellation of stars who would go on to achieve significant fame. These future superstars include:

  • Michael B. Jordan
  • Chadwick Boseman
  • Josh Duhamel
  • Amanda Seyfried

Remarkably, Wilson also played a role in connecting two future ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ stars. She cast Michelle Trachtenberg, who later played Buffy’s sister Dawn, on ‘All My Children’ as Lily Montgomery when Trachtenberg was just 14. Wilson told TV Insider, “The interesting thing about it is that Michelle Trachtenberg came on to ‘All My Children’ when she was 14, and then I’ll be darned if she didn’t end up doing Buffy with Sarah, which I thought was pretty amazing.” Trachtenberg, who sadly passed away in February at age 39, became “big buddies” with Gellar during their time on ‘Buffy’.

A Career Honored

Beyond her iconic work on ‘All My Children’, Judy Blye Wilson‘s extensive career also includes roles as a casting assistant on ‘Ryan’s Hope’ and later as a casting director for ‘The Young and the Restless’. Her profound impact on the television industry was recently recognized on October 17, when she was inducted into the Daytime Emmys’ “Silver Circle”, a society of honor celebrating careers spanning more than 25 years.

Wilson expressed her joy to TV Insider, stating, “I’m absolutely over the moon. It makes me feel validated, like I got it right.” She humbly attributed her success to fortunate timing and the inherent talent of the actors themselves. “It was a plethora of fabulous people coming along in those years, and I think that I was lucky enough to snag some of them when they were very young. I really believe it was just great timing all the way around,” Wilson concluded, encapsulating her remarkable journey of shaping television history, one star at a time.
