Biden’s Resurgent Voice: Former President Addresses Nation Amidst ‘Dark Days’ and Health Battle

In a powerful return to the public stage, former President Joe Biden, 82, urged Americans to remain optimistic despite what he termed “dark days,” directly criticizing President Donald Trump’s administration for perceived attacks on free speech and overreach of executive power, while also sharing details of his battle with aggressive prostate cancer.

Former President Joe Biden, stepping back into the public eye for the first time since completing radiation therapy for an aggressive form of prostate cancer, delivered a passionate address in Boston on Sunday, October 26, 2025. During the Edward M. Kennedy Institute’s 10th-anniversary celebration, where he received a lifetime achievement award, Biden, 82, did not mince words about the challenges facing the nation.

He characterized the current period as “dark days” for the country, directly attributing these concerns to what he described as President Donald Trump’s attacks on free speech and his administration’s testing of the limits of executive power. Despite this stark assessment, Biden urged Americans to resist cynicism and remain steadfastly optimistic, emphasizing the enduring strength of American ideals.

A Beacon of Hope Amidst Political Turmoil

Biden’s speech centered on the foundational principles of American governance. He reiterated that since its inception, America has served as a “beacon” for the most powerful idea in the history of government, an idea he asserted is “stronger than any army” and “more powerful than any dictator.” This sentiment underscored his belief in the resilience of democratic institutions even in times of profound stress.

He specifically highlighted the critical importance of a presidency with limited power, a fully functioning Congress, and an autonomous judiciary. These remarks come at a time when the federal government is grappling with its second-longest shutdown on record, a situation Biden suggested President Trump has exploited to expand his command over government operations, as a CNN analysis reported. This ongoing political gridlock, according to Biden, further underscores the fragility of checks and balances.

“Friends, I can’t sugarcoat any of this. These are dark days,” Biden stated, yet quickly pivoted to a message of hope. He expressed confidence that the country would “find our true compass again” and “emerge as we always have — stronger, wiser and more resilient, more just, so long as we keep the faith.”

Standing Ground Against Threats to Democracy

To illustrate his point about the power of principled resistance, Biden cited various examples of individuals and groups actively standing against perceived threats from the current administration. These included federal employees who have resigned in protest, universities that have faced targeting, and comedians who continue to challenge authority through their craft.

He specifically acknowledged the courage of “the late night hosts [who] continue to shine a light on free speech knowing their careers are on the line.” Furthermore, Biden praised elected Republican officials who have openly voted against or spoken out contrary to the Trump administration’s policies, seeing their actions as vital to maintaining democratic integrity.

“America is not a fairy tale,” he reminded his audience, acknowledging its 250-year history as “a constant push and pull, an existential struggle between peril and possibility.” His concluding message was a direct call to action: “get back up.”

Biden’s Post-Presidency and Health Journey

Biden’s public appearance held additional significance as it marked his return to the spotlight since leaving office in January after serving a single term in the White House. His decision to drop his bid for reelection followed significant pressure after a challenging debate against Donald Trump and mounting concerns regarding his age, health, and mental fitness, as CNN coverage detailed. Following his withdrawal, his Vice President, Kamala Harris, launched her own presidential campaign but ultimately lost to Trump in November.

Adding a personal dimension to his speech, Biden spoke publicly for the first time since completing a round of radiation therapy for his aggressive prostate cancer. In May, his post-presidential office had announced that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, which had unfortunately spread to his bones, as CNN reported.

The aggressiveness of prostate cancers is typically graded using a Gleason score, which ranges from 6 to 10. Scores of 8, 9, and 10 indicate more aggressive cancer behavior. Biden’s office confirmed his score was 9, highlighting the severity of his condition, as CNN Health explained. A CNN report also detailed his recent completion of radiation therapy earlier this month, though his next treatment steps remain unconfirmed.

Despite his health battle, the former president is expected to remain engaged in public life. He is slated to headline an event for the Nebraska Democratic Party in Omaha next month, continuing to lend his voice to political discourse and public advocacy.
