Evan Peters’ Masterful Transformations: From Method Acting the Darkest Roles to Embracing the Light in ‘The Beauty’

From the chilling depths of method acting to playing a romantic lead, Evan Peters continues to captivate audiences and challenge himself, most recently by learning multiple foreign languages for his upcoming role in Ryan Murphy’s “The Beauty,” showcasing his remarkable versatility and commitment to his craft.

For years, Evan Peters has mesmerized fans with his ability to inhabit complex and often disturbing characters, cementing his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most compelling actors. His commitment to bringing these roles to life often involves deep dives into method acting, a technique that has garnered both critical acclaim and concern for the actor’s well-being. Now, as he ventures into new territory with Ryan Murphy’s “The Beauty,” Peters is once again pushing his boundaries, this time through the challenge of mastering multiple foreign languages for a role promising a much lighter, heroic turn.

Understanding the Method: The Depths of Immersion

Method acting, an official system developed by Lee Strasberg in the early 1900s, requires actors to immerse themselves deeply into a role, aiming for the most accurate and authentic portrayal possible. Hollywood icons like Daniel Day-Lewis and Johnny Depp are renowned practitioners, often delivering Oscar-worthy performances as a result. However, this intense approach carries inherent risks, as tragically demonstrated by Heath Ledger’s preparation for the Joker, which involved extreme isolation and sleep deprivation, ultimately leading to his untimely passing, as detailed by Looper.

Actors like Peters must navigate these treacherous waters, especially when portraying real-life figures as profoundly dark as Jeffrey Dahmer. His dedication to understanding the psyche of such individuals defines his career but also necessitates a conscious strategy for returning to reality.

The Darkness of Dahmer and the Path to Recovery

For his role as Jeffrey Dahmer in the Netflix mini-series “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” Evan Peters employed extreme methods to achieve authenticity. He wore lead weights on his arms and lifts in his shoes, meticulously studied psychology reports, confessions, and timelines to grasp Dahmer’s behavior. This deep immersion led co-star Niecy Nash to express concerns for his emotional well-being, even keeping him in her prayers, as reported by Looper.

Thankfully, Peters developed a unique and surprisingly simple recovery process. Once filming concluded, he consciously chose to shed the negativity absorbed from the role by immersing himself in romantic comedies and spending time with family. He famously told himself, “Now it’s time to bring in the joy and the lightness and watch some comedies and romances and go back to St. Louis and see my family and friends and . . . you know, watch ‘Step Brothers’.” This lighthearted approach even prompted Niecy Nash to playfully suggest him for a romantic comedy role, a sentiment many fans undoubtedly share.

A New Horizon: ‘The Beauty’ and Linguistic Prowess

Peters’ career has been marked by his frequent collaborations with producer Ryan Murphy, from his breakthrough on FX’s “American Horror Story” in 2011 to his Emmy-winning performance in HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” and the critically acclaimed “Dahmer” miniseries. Murphy, known for pushing Peters into challenging roles, has once again presented him with a formidable task for their latest project, “The Beauty.”

At a recent New York Comic Con panel, Murphy revealed that Peters learned multiple foreign languages for his mysterious role in the upcoming FX and Hulu series. Peters described his method for tackling this challenge, stating, “It was really working with the tutors. Starting with the basics of the language and then the pronunciation. They’re so different. So, just starting with the basics, and then looking at the script and translating,” as reported by People. He even utilized online resources like the app Babble.

While the exact number of languages remains undisclosed, the international thriller was filmed in New York, Paris, Venice, and Rome, suggesting Peters likely mastered French and Italian. This linguistic achievement adds another impressive skill to his already diverse acting repertoire.

The Shift to a Lighter Hero

“The Beauty” promises to be a significant departure for Peters. According to its synopsis, the series, created by Murphy and Matthew Hodgson, explores a sexually transmitted virus that enhances beauty but carries deadly consequences. More importantly for Peters, Ryan Murphy intends this role to be a much lighter, more heroic part, allowing him to be “Steve McQueen, get the girl and win.”

Murphy noted Peters’ occasional weariness with dark and brooding roles, stating, “He does these wonderful characters for me and I think he’s so satisfied because he wants to be dark and brooding, and then halfway through he’s like, ‘I f—— hate this. I wanna do a rom-com and I wanna be light. I wanna get the girls.'” This new direction in “The Beauty,” set to premiere in early 2026, will finally allow Peters to make an “amazing sacrifice for love,” marking a first in his career. This shift aligns perfectly with the fan-generated hope for a romantic comedy role for the talented actor.

A Legacy of Versatility and Future Anticipation

Evan Peters’ journey from a prominent role in “American Horror Story” to critically acclaimed performances in projects like “Mare of Easttown” and the “X-Men” films showcases an actor continuously seeking growth and diverse challenges. His dedication to each role, whether it’s delving into the darkest corners of the human psyche or embracing the complexities of new languages, defines his enduring appeal.

Fans eagerly anticipate his performance in “The Beauty,” not just for the intriguing premise but to witness Peters in a role that promises a different kind of intensity—one rooted in heroism and romantic sacrifice. This transition highlights his remarkable versatility and solidifies his status as a beloved figure in the acting world, always ready to surprise and impress.
