Abbie Duggar’s Enduring Battle with Hyperemesis Gravidarum: A Comprehensive Look at Her Pregnancy Journey

Fans of Counting On have long followed the journey of Abbie Duggar and her husband, John David Duggar. Abbie has openly shared her profound struggles with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) across multiple pregnancies, revealing numerous hospitalizations and an unwavering spirit, providing a crucial, honest perspective on this severe pregnancy condition.

The lives of John David Duggar and his wife, Abbie Duggar, have been a focal point for many since their marriage in 2018, particularly through their appearances on the TLC series Counting On. Abbie, a former nurse, has bravely shared her challenging experiences with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a severe form of morning sickness that has significantly impacted her pregnancies, leading to multiple hospital stays and intense medical management.

The Initial Struggle: Abbie’s First Pregnancy with Grace

Abbie’s first pregnancy, which brought daughter Grace into the world in January 2020, was marked by severe health complications. During a December 10 episode of Counting On, a then eight-week pregnant Abbie revealed she was “feeling awful” and had been mostly bed-bound. Her condition quickly escalated beyond typical morning sickness, necessitating several visits to the emergency room and multiple hospital admissions.

John David Duggar expressed his deep concern for his wife during this period, telling cameras, “It’s definitely hard watching Abbie in pain, just wishing I could take it away, do something to help her.” Abbie’s resilience shone through, as she consistently reminded herself of the joy to come: “I just keep saying, ‘there’s a baby coming! There’s a baby coming! This has a good ending.’”

The severity of her symptoms led to an official diagnosis of hyperemesis gravidarum. John David further elaborated on the difficult period, sharing with Us Weekly that Abbie “made multiple visits to the ER for dehydration. She couldn’t eat, pretty much, or drink, or anything. So she was actually on IVs and had IVs at home. So that was a pretty scary time.”

Understanding Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a serious condition that affects some pregnant individuals, characterized by severe nausea, persistent vomiting, significant weight loss, and electrolyte disturbances. Unlike typical morning sickness, which is usually mild and resolves by the second trimester, HG can be debilitating and requires medical intervention.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, mild cases of HG might be managed with dietary adjustments, rest, and over-the-counter antacids. However, more severe instances, like Abbie’s, frequently require hospitalization for intravenous fluid and nutrition to combat dehydration and malnutrition, as detailed by the Cleveland Clinic.

A Recurring Challenge: Pregnancy with Baby No. 3

Years later, as Abbie Duggar embarked on her third pregnancy, fans learned that her battle with HG was far from over. On Thursday, October 16, 2025, Abbie took to Instagram to provide an update on her condition, revealing that she had endured another “upside-down summer” filled with pregnancy sickness and hospital stays.

Her social media post, which featured a montage of video clips and photos from a recent trip with John David, conveyed a sense of relief and renewed energy. “After such an upside-down summer with all the pregnancy sickness and hospital stays, this time together felt extra special and refreshing!” she captioned her update on Parade.

Abbie further confirmed her continued struggle with HG in a separate Instagram post, sharing photos of herself cradling her baby bump at the beach. “A little over half way! We had a pretty rough go of it the first half and I am so thankful to be feeling much more like myself again! God is good! #pregnant #hyperemesis,” she wrote, demonstrating her gratitude for feeling better as her pregnancy progresses.

A Growing Family and Shared Journeys

John David and Abbie, already proud parents to daughter Grace, 5, and son Charlie, 3, announced their third pregnancy on September 3, 2025, via a sweet family photo on Instagram. “We’ve been keeping a little secret … 🤭🤗 Baby #3 arriving Winter 2026!!!” they captioned the joyous news.

Adding to the excitement within the Duggar family, John David’s twin sister, Jana Duggar, is also expecting her first child with husband Stephen Wissmann. Jana is reportedly more than halfway through her pregnancy, with her baby due in early 2026, marking a significant period of growth for the extended Duggar clan.

Abbie’s candidness about her recurring health challenges during pregnancy offers invaluable insight and support to many experiencing similar difficulties. Her story is a testament to the strength and resilience of expectant mothers facing severe medical conditions, always keeping the ultimate joy of welcoming a new baby in sight.
