Ace Frehley, the iconic “Spaceman” and co-founder of legendary rock band Kiss, has died at 74 after suffering a brain bleed. His family confirmed the devastating news, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans and former bandmates, who remember his unparalleled contributions to rock music and his unforgettable stage persona.

The rock world mourns the loss of a true icon: Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and co-founding member of the legendary glam rock band Kiss, has passed away at the age of 74. Known to millions as the “Spaceman,” Frehley’s death on Thursday, October 16, 2025, marks the end of an era for rock and roll enthusiasts worldwide. His family confirmed the sad news, expressing profound devastation and heartbreak at his passing, as reported by CBS News.

His family’s heartfelt statement shared the depth of their sorrow: “We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth. We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever!”

The Genesis of a Rock Legend: From the Bronx to Stardom

Born Paul Daniel Frehley in the Bronx, New York, in 1951, Ace Frehley discovered his passion for music at a young age. Largely self-taught, he drew inspiration from guitar greats like B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix. His humble beginnings belied the immense impact he would have on aspiring musicians globally.

“I’m always flattered when people tell me I influenced them. If I knew I was gonna influence thousands of guitar players, I woulda practised more. I laugh, but that’s the truth,” Frehley candidly shared in a 2024 interview with Guitar World. He often expressed surprise and gratitude for the profound influence he had on so many artists, a testament to his unique style and innovative approach to the instrument.

In 1973, Frehley found his destiny, joining forces with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss to form Kiss. As the band’s lead guitarist, he became synonymous with the “Spaceman” persona, an otherworldly character complete with silver metallic face makeup, pyrotechnics, and guitars that would smoke and shoot rockets. His distinctive guitar riffs became the backbone of many Kiss hits, including “Shock Me,” “Into the Void,” and “2,000 Man.”

A Rollercoaster Journey with Kiss and Beyond

Frehley’s tenure with Kiss was marked by periods of both intense collaboration and solo exploration. He departed the band in 1982 to launch his own successful projects, including Frehley’s Comet and a robust solo career. His solo album, 10,000 Volts, was released as recently as February 2023, showcasing his continued artistic drive.

Despite a sometimes tumultuous relationship with his former bandmates, Frehley rejoined Kiss for a highly anticipated reunion tour in 1996, which lasted until 2002. Occasional collaborations followed, such as a charity concert with Gene Simmons in 2017 and an impromptu performance at Simmons’ “Vault Experience” in 2018, much to the delight of the Kiss Army.

Interestingly, Frehley held a unique perspective on Kiss’s retirement. “I’m the only game in town because Kiss is supposedly retired — which I don’t believe is gonna happen,” he told Billboard in February 2024, hinting at his continuous belief in the enduring power of the band’s legacy. He had even added more Kiss songs to his solo setlist, responding to fan demand.

The Final Health Battle

Frehley’s passing came weeks after a severe health emergency. He had been hospitalized on life support following a fall in his studio that resulted in a brain bleed. A statement posted on his official Instagram on September 25, 2025, initially described it as a “minor fall,” advising him to refrain from travel. Less than two weeks later, on October 6, 2025, an update revealed his “difficult decision” to cancel all remaining 2025 tour dates due to “some ongoing medical issues,” as noted in a Facebook post by his tour manager.

A brain bleed, medically known as an intracranial hemorrhage, occurs when blood accumulates between the skull and brain. This life-threatening condition, often caused by head injuries or severe falls, restricts oxygen to the brain and requires urgent treatment. Frehley’s condition reportedly failed to improve while on life support, leading to profound heartbreak for his loved ones.

Tributes Pour In for an Unforgettable Icon

The news of Frehley’s death brought immediate tributes from across the music industry. His former bandmates, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, shared their sorrow. “He was an essential and irreplaceable rock soldier during some of the most formative foundational chapters of the band and its history,” they stated. “He is and will always be a part of KISS’s legacy.”

Bret Michaels, frontman of Poison, also paid his respects: “Ace, my brother, I surely cannot thank you enough for the years of great music, the many festivals we’ve done together and your lead guitar on Nothing But A Good Time.” These tributes underscore the immense respect and admiration Frehley commanded among his peers.

A Legacy That Will Live On Forever

Ace Frehley’s impact on rock music is immeasurable. As a crucial architect of Kiss’s sound and visual identity, he helped forge a band that would sell over 100 million records worldwide and earn more gold albums than any other American band. His induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, alongside the original Kiss lineup, cemented his place in music history.

Beyond the accolades, Frehley’s true legacy lies in his unique guitar style, his groundbreaking stage presence, and the countless guitarists he inspired. He was a pioneer of glam rock and a significant influence on the “hair metal” bands of the 1980s. The “Spaceman” may have left this earth, but his memory, his music, and his iconic spirit will continue to live on forever in the hearts of rock fans across the globe.
