The Walking Dead Unites Past and Future: A Definitive Guide to the 15th Anniversary Auction and Expanding Universe

As “The Walking Dead” approaches its 15th anniversary, fans are presented with a unique opportunity to own a piece of its history through an extensive prop auction, even as the franchise continues to evolve and expand with multiple new series and stories that promise to redefine the zombie apocalypse for years to come.

It’s been nearly 15 years since “The Walking Dead” first shambled onto screens on Halloween, forever altering the landscape of horror television. What began as a grim tale of survival quickly blossomed into a cultural phenomenon, spawning a vast universe of stories and characters. Now, as the franchise marks this significant milestone, fans are invited to connect with its enduring legacy in two exciting ways: by bidding on iconic props from its storied past and by looking forward to its continuously expanding future.

Own a Piece of the Apocalypse: The Walking Dead Prop Auction

To commemorate its 15-year journey, AMC Networks has partnered with Heritage Auctions to offer fans a truly unique opportunity: an auction of over 1,000 prop items spanning the entire franchise. This unparalleled collection takes enthusiasts “on a journey” through the timeline of the show, from its groundbreaking first season to the original series’ 2022 finale, and into its various popular spinoffs. Online bidding for these coveted items runs until November 1st, 2025, allowing fans worldwide to secure a tangible piece of their favorite zombie saga.

Greg Nicotero, the show’s special makeup effects supervisor, executive producer, and director, played a pivotal role in curating this extensive auction. A veteran of the zombie genre since long before joining “The Walking Dead” in 2009, Nicotero highlighted the emotional connection these props create. He expressed his own interest in acquiring a piece of history, noting, “I think I’m gonna have to buy some stuff.” Among the items catching his eye is Glenn Rhee’s guitar, starting at $1,000, and Carol Peletier’s pickaxe, famously used in Season 1. Other notable items include five masks used for background zombies and the original 1971 Pontiac Tempest from the series premiere, which has the highest starting bid at $25,000. Prices range from as low as $500 for other items, making a piece of the universe accessible to many fans.

Nicotero emphasizes that owning these props “takes those iconic moments, and it grounds them in a reality. You’re not just seeing it on television, but it’s something tangible that you can hold. So that kind of blows me away.” The full auction catalog is available for browsing on the Heritage Auctions website.

More Than Just a Zombie Show: A Legacy of Innovation

“The Walking Dead” wasn’t just a horror show; it was a television phenomenon that resonated deeply with audiences. Nicotero proudly stated, “I’m proud of the fact that we changed the way people make television with this show, and I was part of that.” He noted that the series “did something that most zombie material to that date had never done… it made you feel something.” This emotional depth, combined with award-winning makeup and prosthetics (many of which are included in the auction), made the zombies “come alive” and grounded the fantastical premise in a raw, human reality.

Scott Gimple, chief content officer for “The Walking Dead” Universe, reinforced this sentiment, likening the franchise’s storytelling possibilities to the intricate canons of DC and Marvel comics. He stated, “It was all one story. It went in all sorts of different directions,” and highlighted the ability to place characters in “different worlds where they have different challenges and evolve them through these challenges,” as reported by Variety. AMC Networks CEO Kristin Dolan recalled how in 2010, the show was cautioned as “a niche of a niche” but proved to be “quite a niche,” defying initial expectations.

The Ever-Expanding Universe: A Guide to the Spinoffs

Nearly 15 years after its premiere and two years since the original series concluded, “The Walking Dead” Universe shows no signs of stopping. A testament to its “lightning in a bottle” success, the franchise has continuously expanded with a diverse array of spinoffs, each exploring new facets of the post-apocalyptic world and beloved characters.

Current and Recent Spinoffs

  • Fear the Walking Dead: Premiering in 2015, this was the first spinoff, acting as a prequel to the original series for its initial three seasons. Set in Los Angeles and later elsewhere, it chronicles the very beginning of the apocalypse and the struggles of a blended family. It concluded with its eighth season in 2023 and featured crossovers like Morgan Jones and Dwight.
  • The Walking Dead: World Beyond: This two-season limited series (2020-2021) focused on the first generation of teenagers to come of age in the apocalypse in Nebraska. It provided significant insight into the mysterious Civic Republic Military (CRM), an organization central to the larger universe.
  • Tales of the Walking Dead: An anthology series that premiered in August 2022, this unique spinoff tells individual stories of new and returning characters across different timelines and locations within the TWD universe. Each episode offers a self-contained narrative.
  • The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon: Norman Reedus’s fan-favorite character embarked on a solo journey, finding himself in France. Premiering in 2023, the series, which Greg Nicotero executive produces and has directed episodes for, has been renewed for a fourth season. Originally planned to feature Carol Peletier, logistical challenges led to Melissa McBride’s temporary departure, though the door remains open for her return.
  • The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (Rick and Michonne Series): This highly anticipated limited series, reuniting Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), aired in 2024. It explores their “epic love story” and the challenges of their long separation, picking up after Rick’s presumed death and Michonne’s quest to find him. This series evolved from what was initially announced as a movie trilogy.
  • The Walking Dead: Dead City: This direct sequel to the original series premiered in June 2023, starring Lauren Cohan (Maggie) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan). Set in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, it follows the unlikely duo as they navigate a crumbling city filled with new dangers and a complex dynamic between the characters who once harbored deep animosity for each other.

The Future is Undead

With an ongoing commitment to exploring “many more continents to visit” and allowing characters to “evolve over time,” as expressed by AMC Networks president Dan McDermott, the future of “The Walking Dead” Universe appears as expansive as ever. The diverse narratives, compelling character development, and groundbreaking effects that have defined the franchise since its 2010 debut continue to draw in new viewers and keep long-time fans eagerly awaiting what new horrors and triumphs the undead world will bring next. Whether through owning a piece of history or tuning into the latest spinoff, the legacy of “The Walking Dead” is sure to live on for many anniversaries to come.
