Nokia Bell Labs is setting the stage for its next century of groundbreaking research, relocating its iconic R&D hub to a cutting-edge facility in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This strategic move, supported by significant state investment and designed to foster unparalleled collaboration, promises to supercharge innovation in 6G, AI, and quantum technologies, cementing New Jersey’s role as a global tech leader.

For over 80 years, Nokia Bell Labs has been synonymous with pioneering research and transformative technological breakthroughs. From the invention of the transistor to the birth of cellular communications, its Murray Hill, New Jersey campus has been a global epicenter of innovation. Now, this storied legacy is set to continue and expand in a new, state-of-the-art facility located in the burgeoning technology hub of New Brunswick, New Jersey.

A Strategic Relocation for Future Breakthroughs

Nokia announced its plans to relocate its campus from Murray Hill to New Brunswick by 2028, signaling a renewed commitment to New Jersey and establishing the city as Nokia’s new R&D hub on the East Coast. This move is more than just a change of address; it’s a strategic evolution designed to propel Nokia Bell Labs to the forefront of cutting-edge technology for the next century.

According to Nishant Batra, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer at Nokia, the goal is to marry Bell Labs’ exceptional vision, brain power, and culture of disruptive innovation with a modern facility tailored to future needs. “Ultimately, we want a facility that feels right for the next 100 years of Nokia Bell Labs,” Batra stated in an official press release.

The HELIX: A Collaborative Innovation Ecosystem

The new 10-story, 369,749-square-foot facility, known as H-2, is the second phase of the ambitious New Jersey Health + Life Science Exchange (HELIX) campus in downtown New Brunswick. This innovation district is specifically designed to foster an ecosystem of academic centers of excellence, established industry leaders, and exciting new startup ventures.

The proximity to institutions like Princeton, Rutgers, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and the Stevens Institute of Technology was a significant factor in the site selection. This strategic placement will enable Bell Labs research teams to engage in a tightly knit, dynamic campus environment, accelerating the development of disruptive technologies.

The facility’s groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 4, 2025, with construction anticipated to conclude by the end of 2027. Developers SJP Properties, in a joint venture with North Haven Net REIT, are leading the construction, supported by the New Brunswick Development Corporation (DEVCO), the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), and the City of New Brunswick. The building will meet a minimum LEED Gold certification, aligning with Nokia’s target of net-zero emissions by 2050.

Upon completion, Nokia will occupy the facility under a 20-year master lease, bringing approximately 1,000 scientists and engineers to New Brunswick. The facility will house bespoke laboratories for:

  • Quantum computing
  • Photonics and optical research
  • 6G and advanced wireless communications
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)
  • Industrial automation
  • Chemistry and biology laboratories
  • Data centers and 3D printing areas

In addition to dedicated research spaces, the building will feature a public main lobby with a technology showcase and a coffee shop, offering direct access to the “paseo”—a public outdoor space connecting the Rutgers campus, the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital district, the train station, and the city’s government and arts district. This design emphasizes integration with the broader community.

New Jersey’s Vision for an Innovation Economy

The move by Nokia Bell Labs is a cornerstone of New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s vision to reclaim the state’s leadership in innovation. Governor Murphy highlighted the immense potential of the HELIX to attract and cultivate talent, creating high-quality jobs and fostering long-term economic growth. “By announcing its new state-of-the-art facility in the helix, Nokia builds upon its remarkable legacy in the Garden State,” Governor Murphy remarked in a statement shared by ROI-NJ.

The NJEDA further bolstered the project by approving a 10-year, $103.9 million tax credit award under the state’s ASPIRE program. This significant investment underscores the state’s commitment to supporting catalytic development projects that transform communities into dynamic, transit-oriented innovation hubs.

The HELIX campus itself is a testament to this vision. Its first phase, HELIX 1, is expected to open next year and will house the New Jersey Innovation Hub incubator, a new home for the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and a translational research institute. This integrated approach aims to attract startups and early-stage companies, fostering a vibrant environment where research can quickly transition to commercial applications.

From Lab to Market: The Venture Studio Initiative

Beyond its core R&D, Nokia is also launching a new venture studio based in New Jersey. This initiative aims to unleash the commercial potential of Nokia Bell Labs’ innovations outside of Nokia’s immediate strategic focus areas. Through partnerships with firms like Celesta Capital and America’s Frontier Fund, the venture studio will invest in and build companies that leverage Bell Labs’ breakthroughs to drive the next generation of critical technology for the U.S.

These venture deals are specifically centered on Bell Labs’ research efforts in areas such as:

  • Advanced 5G/6G communications
  • Next-generation semiconductor and optical chip design and packaging
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)
  • Sensors and quantum computing

This strategic move not only accelerates technological advancement but also supports the local economy by fostering new businesses and job creation, turning theoretical research into tangible commercial products.

Bell Labs: A Century of Groundbreaking Achievements

The relocation comes as Nokia Bell Labs recently celebrated its 100th anniversary in May 2025. Originally incorporated in 1925 as an AT&T subsidiary under the name Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc., its history extends even further back to the late 19th century. The organization has an unparalleled record of scientific and engineering innovations, including:

  • The first synchronous-sound motion-picture system (1926)
  • The pioneer electrical-relay digital computer (1937)
  • The invention of the transistor (1947), earning Nobel Prizes for its researchers
  • Early development of cellular and satellite communications, including Telstar, the world’s first satellite communications system (1960s)
  • The discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation (1978), also a Nobel Prize winner
  • Pioneering work in sonar, lasers, solar cells, and Unix operating system

After a series of corporate changes, including being part of Lucent Technologies Inc. and later Alcatel-Lucent, Bell Labs was acquired by Nokia in 2016. Despite these transitions, the commitment to fundamental research and disruptive innovation has remained steadfast. The new New Brunswick facility is designed to perpetuate this legacy, offering modern research capabilities that will attract and inspire future generations of scientific talent.

As Peter Vetter, Bell Labs core research president, noted in an IEEE Spectrum article, “This is not just a move for the next two, three, four, or five years; this is going to be home for Bell Labs for a very, very long time.” The groundbreaking in New Brunswick marks not just a new chapter, but a bold stride towards defining the technological landscape of the next century.
