Cracks in the Dynasty: Jalen Hurts’ Uncharacteristic Mistakes Signal Deeper Issues for the Struggling Eagles

An uncharacteristic performance from Jalen Hurts, marked by a rare interception and key missed throws, highlighted the Philadelphia Eagles’ concerning second straight loss, fueling worries about the defending champions’ recent struggles and what it means for their Super Bowl aspirations.

The Philadelphia Eagles are facing a crisis of confidence, reeling from their second consecutive loss, a decisive 34-17 rout by the New York Giants. At the center of this unexpected slump is quarterback Jalen Hurts, whose uncharacteristic mistakes have fans and analysts alike questioning the direction of the defending champions. On Thursday, October 9, 2025, in East Rutherford, N.J., Hurts’ performance was notably off, highlighted by critical errors that directly contributed to the Eagles’ defeat.

One of the most glaring missed opportunities came early, when Hurts overthrew DeVonta Smith, who was wide open for what should have been an easy touchdown. This costly error set the tone for a night where precision seemed to elude the typically accurate quarterback. However, the true lowlight arrived in the fourth quarter when Hurts threw his first interception of the season to Cor’Dale Flott. Flott’s 68-yard return directly set up the Giants’ fifth touchdown, essentially sealing the Eagles’ fate in the 34-17 rout.

“Bad ball. Bad ball,” Hurts admitted in the post-game press conference. He added, “I didn’t execute well enough situationally, and I obviously can’t turn the ball over in the red zone. I’ll look into the tape, and I know our team will as a group and we’ll get critical of ourselves on that and learn from it.” This interception was particularly surprising, marking only his second in 15 games over the past 11 months, a span that includes his MVP performance in the Super Bowl.

Beyond Hurts: A Team-Wide Struggle

While Hurts’ performance drew significant attention, the issues ran deeper than just the quarterback. The Eagles’ defense struggled immensely, allowing the Giants to convert an alarming 11 of 16 third-down opportunities. Even a fumble by Saquon Barkley with 6:50 remaining in the game wasn’t enough to spark a comeback, as many disillusioned fans began heading for the exits.

Hurts’ struggles on third down were also a critical factor, with the Eagles converting only 1 of 9 chances. This lack of execution from an “elite quarterback” signals deeper problems for a team that was once considered a dominant force. Just days before, the Eagles had suffered another devastating loss, blowing a 17-3 lead at home to Denver on Sunday. This latest defeat, where they fell completely flat as a 7 1/2-point favorite at the Meadowlands, has intensified concerns.

Head coach Nick Sirianni acknowledged the team’s need for improvement, stating, “We have a lot of things to get fixed. We just had an off night. Everybody did.” This collective slump is particularly alarming for a franchise that did not lose back-to-back games at all last season.

Key Moments of Collapse

The unraveling began early in the second half. Trailing by three, the Eagles faced a third-and-6 from their own 11-yard line. DeVonta Smith had beaten Cor’Dale Flott and was streaking downfield uncovered, but Hurts’ throw sailed several yards over his head, leading to one of Philadelphia’s four punts.

“Another opportunity to keep attacking them and capitalizing,” Hurts reflected. “I didn’t give him a good ball. It’s something that I own and something that I’m going to work on.” Following this missed opportunity, Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart capitalized, leading a nine-play, 56-yard drive that culminated in one of fellow rookie Cam Skattebo’s three touchdown runs. The Eagles’ subsequent two drives gained a mere 8 yards apiece, showcasing their offensive struggles.

The interception by Cor’Dale Flott came as the Eagles were attempting to get back into the game, still within reach in the red zone. Flott’s incredible play, stepping in front of a throw intended for Jahan Dotson, nearly resulted in a pick-six and was a major turning point. Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart acknowledged the impact, saying, “Flott made an amazing play. I thought that was a huge swing for our team.” For Hurts, this was his first regular season interception since November 10, a date which ironically marked a blowout win at Dallas.

A Troubling Trend for the Defending Champions

The Eagles’ current predicament is a stark contrast to their dominant run last season, where they never lost back-to-back games. Their last three-game losing streak spanned from December 31, 2023, to January 15, 2024. This unfortunate run included a previous defeat at the Meadowlands against the Giants and a playoff elimination at the hands of Tampa Bay. The current consecutive losses echo this troubling past, raising questions among the fan community about whether the team is heading down a similar path.

For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, consecutive losses, especially one where they blew a significant lead against Denver, are deeply concerning. Hurts, ever the competitor, remains focused on the future. “You play the game to win,” he stated. “Obviously, we’re competitive in that and trying to figure that out. We’ve got some work to do, and that’s all that matters.” The fan community, while concerned, will be eagerly watching to see how the Eagles address these issues and whether their star quarterback can lead them back to their winning ways.
