House Oversight Chairman James Comer said Monday the Justice Department is cooperating with the committee’s subpoena for Jeffrey Epstein files.
Comer spoke to reporters ahead of former Attorney General William Barr’s closed-door deposition, telling them the committee expects to receive the records soon. “We’re having really good conversations,” Comer said. “You could imagine how many documents there are. I think we’re going to receive the documents very soon. They’re compiling everything together. We’re working together in a good-faith effort, and everything is coming along.”
“I expect to receive the documents very, very soon,” the chairman continued.
The Justice Department faces a Tuesday deadline to turn over the subpoenaed records. Comer issued the subpoena Aug. 5, and a federal judge later rejected the DOJ’s request to unseal grand jury materials in Ghislaine Maxwell’s case.
The chairman also subpoenaed former FBI Directors James Comey and Robert Mueller, though the committee is expected to withdraw Mueller’s subpoena because of health issues preventing him from testifying, the Daily Caller reported Monday.
Former Attorneys General Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, Merrick Garland, Jeff Sessions and Alberto Gonzales also received letters outlining their potential knowledge of Epstein-related matters. (RELATED: What In The World Is Going On With Ghislaine Maxwell?)
The subpoenas followed Comer’s decision to indefinitely postpone Maxwell’s deposition on Aug. 1 at the request of her attorney, David Oscar Markus. Days later, Markus filed papers in the Southern District of New York opposing the DOJ’s effort to unseal grand jury transcripts from Maxwell’s case.
