What Was the ‘I’d Rather Go Naked’ Campaign?
The campaign was created by animal rights organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).
Following the Go-Go’s kick off appearance, the campaign went on to feature several other big stars, including Pamela Anderson, Wendy Williams, Pink, Carnie Wilson, Tommy Lee, Dennis Rodman and several other celebrities posing nude to support the anti-fur movement.
What Were the Go-Go’s Doing in 1990?
The Go-Go’s, still the first and only all-female band that played their own instruments to have a No. 1 album, experienced their greatest success in the 1980s with their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, which topped the Billboard 200 in March 1982 and stayed at No. 1 for six weeks, thanks in part to the hit singles “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed.”
While the band continued to have success with subsequent albums, Vacation (1982) and Talk Show (1984) and hit singles “Vacation” and “Head Over Heels,” the group broke up in 1985.
After the Go-Go’s members pursued various solo projects, with Carlisle finding the most success, the group reunited in 1990.

Following the release of a few compilations, the band issued God Bless the Go-Go’s, their first new album of original material in 17 years, in 2001, featuring a song co-written by Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day.
In 2021, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after a documentary on the group, The Go-Go’s, brought them renewed attention.
What Are the Go-Go’s Doing Now?
This year has been a big one for the Go-Go’s. In April, the band played the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, Calif. for two weekends. The following month, the Go-Go’s were featured at the Cruel World Festival in Pasadena, Calif.
Belinda Carlisle is readying the release of her latest solo effort, Once Upon a Time in California, due Aug. 29, while Wiedlin, Caffey and Schock are preparing to play the Rock and Roll Carnival benefit concert in Los Angeles on Aug. 23.
