What a night!

Mamma Mia! is finally back on Broadway for a limited six-month run at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City. The show officially opened on Thursday night, after almost two weeks of previews. The musical originally premiered on Broadway at the same theater in 2001 and ran until September 2015.

Written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical based on songs recorded by the popular 1970s Swedish group ABBA and composed by members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. The musical follows single mother Donna Sheridan (Christine Sherrill) and her daughter, Sophie (Amy Weaver), who is about to get married. Sophie, determined to find and invite her dad to her wedding, secretly invites three men from her mother’s past in hopes of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day.

The musical was originally a West End Production and opened in the Prince Edward Theatre in London in April 1999. Mamma Mia! still plays in theaters in London at the Novello Theatre.

In 2008, the Broadway musical was adapted as a film, starring Meryl Streep as Donna and Amanda Seyfried as Sophie. A sequel titled Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! was released in 2018, with most of the original cast returning to reprise their roles.

Christine Baranski, who played one of Donna’s best friends, Tanya, in the 2008 and 2018 films, attended the opening night of the Broadway revival on Thursday evening and stunned in a silver sequin two-piece suit. Many fans saw the 73-year-old actress on the red carpet and shared photos on social media. Plus, the official Instagram account for Mamma Mia! The Musical featured her in a video montage highlighting the best moments from opening night.

Other cast members from the movie, such as Streep, who is busy filming the sequel to the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Julie Walters were unfortunately not in attendance.

The cast of the 2025 Broadway revival also includes Carly Sakolove as Rosie, Jalynn Steele as Tanya, Rob Marnell as Harry Bright, Jim Newman as Bill Austin, Victor Wallace as Sam Carmichael and Grant Reynolds as Sky. Meanwhile, the original creative team remains from the 2001 show, including director Phyllida Lloyd, choreographer Anthony Van Laast, and lighting designer Howard Harrison.

Fans can purchase tickets on the show’s official website. Mamma Mia! will be playing on Broadway for a limited engagement at the Winter Garden Theatre until February 1, 2026.
