President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin provided an update Friday on Ukraine-Russia peace talks.

Trump announced on Truth Social last week that he will meet with Putin in Alaska to continue his push for a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. During a press conference at the Alaska summit, Trump said there is “no deal until there’s a deal.”

“There were many, many points that we agreed on, most of them, I would say, a couple of big ones that we haven’t quite got there, but we’ve made some headway. So there’s no deal until there’s a deal. I will call up NATO in a little while. I will call up the various people that I think are appropriate, and I’ll, of course, call up President Zelensky and tell him about today’s meeting,” Trump said. “I think everybody wants to deal with us. We’ve become the hottest country anywhere in the world in a very short period of time, and we look forward to that.”

Trump said the talks fell short of a final agreement but expressed confidence that a deal could still be reached.

“We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to. There are just a very few that are left. Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there. We didn’t get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there,” Trump added. “I would like to thank President Putin and his entire team whose faces, who I know in many cases otherwise, other than that, whose faces I get to see all the time in the newspapers. You’re very, you’re almost as famous as the boss, but especially this one right over here.”

Putin said his relationship with Trump has grown stronger, adding that he believes their negotiations could lead to a resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.

“Me and President Trump have built a very good, business-like, and trustworthy contact. And I have every reason to believe that moving down this path, we can come and [be] suited better to the end of the conflict in Ukraine,” Putin said.

Trump announced in May that negotiations would begin following a two-hour call with Putin. Despite Trump’s push for peace, Putin remained hesitant to engage with Ukraine. (RELATED: Mark Halperin Predicts US Will Arrest Putin At Trump Summit)

By July, Trump unveiled a new plan to support Ukraine by supplying offensive weapons and threatening “severe” sanctions and tariffs against Russia, giving Putin 50 days to negotiate. On July 28, Trump abruptly shortened the deadline to just “10 or 12 days.”

Trump doubled down on his vow to impose sweeping secondary tariffs and sanctions targeting key Russian industries. As a final push to jumpstart negotiations, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin, spending three hours discussing the possibility of peace talks.
