Weapons tells the mysterious fictional story of 17 children disappearing in the small town of Maybrook, Pa.
However, the horror movie was primarily shot in and around Atlanta
Production for the film happened at a local elementary school and in different neighborhoods, and at gas stations
As the story of Weapons unfolds, the town and neighborhood start feeling like an important character.
The mystery horror film, which was written and directed by Barbarian‘s Zach Cregger, follows the community members of Maybrook, Pa., trying to figure out how 17 children from the same third-grade class mysteriously disappeared on the same night. As the story unravels, frustrated parents discover that all the kids woke up and ran out of their homes at exactly 2:17 a.m.
Weapons stars Josh Brolin as a concerned parent trying to uncover the truth and Julia Garner as the third-grade teacher whose students went missing. Meanwhile, only one third-grade boy, named Alex Lilly (Cary Christopher), doesn’t vanish.
While the film feels eerily realistic, the town of Maybrook is fictional, and it was primarily filmed in the suburbs of Atlanta. Cregger previously shared that he was initially adamant about filming in Pennsylvania, but he quickly learned that several other horror films he admired were also shot in Georgia.
“I kept getting pissed when we were scouting around Atlanta,” Cregger told Entertainment Weekly in July 2025. “I was like, ‘I just wish we could shoot in Pennsylvania where they shot Prisoners.’ And then I found out, no, they shot Prisoners in Atlanta. So we didn’t stop until we found exactly what we were looking for. It was like, if it works for them, it’ll work for us.”
So, where was Weapons filmed? Here’s everything to know about the real-life locations seen in the horror movie.

Although Weapons shows a small town in Pennsylvania, the movie was actually filmed in and around Atlanta.
Cregger told production designer Tom Hammock that he was looking for an area that felt like a “small New Eastern town,” according to Time Out. When looking for the right location, Hammock researched towns outside cities like Philadelphia, Cleveland and Cincinnati, before ultimately settling on Atlanta.
Specifically, Weapons was filmed in the suburbs of Covington, Decatur, East Point, Griffin, Jonesboro, Stone Mountain and Tucker, according to the Georgia Film Office. All the towns lie less than 40 miles from Atlanta and gave the filmmakers the “small town feel” they were looking for.
“This is supposed to be a small town feel, and we really found an incredible little neighborhood to shoot everything,” producer Michelle Morrissey told the Georgia Film Office. “Not only is the look right, but the people who live in it have been so welcoming and flexible, and it’s great.”
Meanwhile, Hammock explained that one of the major points they wanted to convey to viewers was how realistic the town felt. He told the organization, “The key with this film is that it’s very normal. Everything about it, visually, is something you would see wherever you would go in the U.S. The more real this film is, the more you completely buy in as an audience.”
Production coordinator Tanner Pemelton also pointed out that another reason they chose to film in Atlanta was the “diverse” landscape, with both rural and mountainous terrain.
“I think they’ve done really well just tonally, setting-wise, it creates a vibe that allows more people to go, ‘What if that happened to me?’ ” Brolin added.
Garner agreed and said that she “loved shooting” in Atlanta and meeting the “really interesting” people working and living there.

The town of Maybrook, Pa., where the 17 children went missing in Weapons, is fictional.
However, there is a small village named Maybrook in the Hudson Valley area of New York, but it doesn’t appear to be related to the town Cregger created for his film.

Although the town of Maybrook isn’t real, the Maybrook Elementary School was filmed at the real school, Brockett Elementary School, per Time Out. It is located about 15 miles northeast of Atlanta in Tucker, Ga.
For the film, Weapons replaced the signage with “Maybrook Elementary School” and later surrounded it with dozens of flowers and posters honoring the “Maybrook 17” after the kids went missing.

While the film primarily takes place in the neighborhood of Maybrook, Weapons also shot scenes at other businesses.
In one shocking scene, Maybrook Elementary School principal Marcus (Benedict Wong) goes into a craze and attacks Justine (Garner) at a gas station. Weapons chose a BP gas station in Covington, Ga., which is about 35 miles southeast of Atlanta, Time Out reported.
In addition to the gas station, the crew used a nearby convenience store and the streets of Elm Street Northeast in Covington.
