70s Rock Icon Praises Mariska Hargitay’s Film About Mom Jayne Mansfield originally appeared on Parade.
70s rock legend Chrissie Hynde recently praised Law and Order star Mariska Hargitay for her new documentary film, My Mom, Jayne.
“I saw a screening of the new documentary about Jayne Mansfield: My Mom, Jayne. Written and directed by her daughter Mariska Hargitay,” the Pretenders vocalist, 73, wrote in an Instagram post on August 11. “You probably know who Mariska is because she’s the star of the longest running television show in history, Law and Order.”
The guitarist continued, “A fascinating and well-made documentary shedding light on one of the most misunderstood, and more or less forgotten, Hollywood stars, Jayne Mansfield. Jayne was never happy being a sex symbol because she really wanted to be a serious actress. And now her daughter is. A bit of a tear jerker.”
Hargitay herself went on to share Hynde’s post to her own Instagram Stories to acknowledge the kind words about the film.
The Pretenders were formed in London in 1978 and are perhaps best known for their singles “Brass In Pocket” and “Don’t Get Me Wrong.” The band also features James Honeyman-Scott on lead guitar, backing vocals, and keyboards, Pete Farndon on bass and backing vocals, and Martin Chambers on drums and backing vocals.
Hargitay’s film had its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival back in May in the Cannes Classic section of the festival. It was subsequently released on HBO and HBO Max at the end of June, where it can be streamed now via subscription.
When the documentary was announced back in April, the director-actress made a heartfelt statement. “This movie is a labor of love and longing. It’s a search for the mother I never knew, an integration of a part of myself I’d never owned, and a reclaiming of my mother’s story and my own truth,” Hargitay explained at the time. “I’ve always believed there is strength in vulnerability, and the process of making this film has confirmed that belief like never before.”
