Seth Rogen wanted to ‘lose my mind’ while repeatedly filming “The Studio”’s exploding coffee scene: ‘Very stressful’

Cut! Seth Rogen is revealing The Studio scene that nearly pushed him to his limit.

During a recent visit to Late Night With Seth Meyers, the series co-creator and star, 43, recalled becoming deeply frustrated while filming one long continuous sequence that saw him repeatedly splashed with coffee.

“There’s one whole episode called ‘The Oner’ which is all about a movie trying to capture a long, continuous take, and the episode itself is a long, continuous take,” Rogen explained. “And the joke in the episode is that the sun is setting, and in real life, as we were shooting the episode, the sun was setting, which was very stressful.”

And there was one scene in particular that was hindering their timing.

“There’s a joke at the end where I’ve ordered a coffee early in the episode and as I’m running to my car to leave the set, a P.A. tries to hand me the coffee and I run into it and it explodes all over my face,” Rogen said. “And, for some reason, every time we got to that exact moment, the camera fritzed out and stopped filming properly.”

Which meant, of course, that they had to reset and start all over again.

“I would change my clothes and I would have this coffee explode in my face and I’d be running [and] in the car and I would hear, ‘Cut!’ And we’d have to do it again,” he said. “And then we start running out of dry clothes because we’re like, ‘It can’t happen that many times!’ And then I’m like, ‘It just keeps happening!’”

And, as it turns out, there’s only so much coffee to the face that a person can take before they start to spiral.

“There’s a moment where, as a person who’s not particularly in tune with how to deal with his emotions, I wanted to lose my mind and scream at someone,” Rogen said. “And that’s when you’re hit with the unfortunate revelation that you’re in charge of everything, and you can’t yell at anyone but yourself because you’ve decided to do all this. So you just have to suck it up and keep going.”

As a result, though, the final episode was “much darker” than the sunset shot they had initially set their sights upon.

“The joke is we’re trying to beat the sunset, and it’s much darker than we wanted it to be,” he said. “And I remember performing the scene thinking like, ‘We didn’t do this. It’s too dark. It’s not going to work.’ And then in the episode, it happened to work perfectly. It worked very well, ultimately.”

It wasn’t just that episode that worked out well for The Studio. The series received 23 nods at the 2025 Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
