Katie Couric told PEOPLE her one rule as a grandparent
The veteran journalist, 68, became a first-time grandmother in March 2024 after her daughter Ellie gave birth to a son
Couric previously said her grandson, John Albert, “will be called Jay in honor of his maternal grandfather,” referring to her late husband and Ellie’s father, Jay Monahan
Katie Couric is setting an important boundary as a grandmother.
The veteran journalist, 68, exclusively told PEOPLE her one rule as a grandparent during the Aug. 9 red carpet in Nashville for Stand Up to Cancer’s annual televised fundraising special, which will air on Aug. 15.
“My only ‘grandmother rule’ is to not tell my daughter what to do,” Couric says of her daughter Ellie, 34, who welcomed a son named John Albert with husband Mark Dobrosky in March 2024.
“She’s an extraordinary mom. She’s doing an amazing job. And when it comes to parenting, I just keep my trap shut,” she adds with a laugh.

Couric became a first-time grandma with the birth of Ellie’s son.
“John Albert Dobrosky was born on his due date … March 23rd at 8:23 am, just shy of seven pounds,” Couric announced on Instagram in 2024.
“He will be called Jay in honor of his maternal grandfather,” she added, referring to her late husband and Ellie’s father, Jay Monahan, who died of colon cancer in 1998 at age 42.

“Mom and Dad are over the moon, I am thrilled to have my first grandchild, Carrie can’t wait to be a cool Aunt and Molner is enjoying handing out cigars. We feel so blessed. 💙🥰🍼👶🏻💙 We’ll have more tomorrow in Wake-Up Call ⏰❤️,” Couric concluded, referring to her husband John Molner, 62, and her other daughter Carrie, 29.
Couric, who co-founded Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) in 2008, also told PEOPLE why the 2025 SU2C television special was taped in Nashville.
“Nashville is a great healthcare city — it’s got Vanderbilt and the Ingram Cancer Center — and we just wanted to infuse a little country,” she says.
The SU2C telecast will feature performances from Sheryl Crow, Jonas Brothers, Noah Cyrus, Gavin DeGraw, Marcus King, Brothers Osborne, Jon Pardi, Jelly Roll, Dan + Shay and CeCe Winans.
“All of the artists who have come tonight and who have supported us through the years, we are eternally grateful to them because they give us a lot of recognition, a lot of star power, and many of them have also been affected by cancer,” Couric tells PEOPLE.
Stand Up to Cancer’s televised fundraising special airs on Aug. 15 across these multiple channels and streaming services.
