NEED TO KNOW

  • Linda Hamilton opened up about becoming a grandma during an exclusive interview with PEOPLE about her new film, Osiris

  • “I want to throw my arms around [my grandson] and protect him from everything. Hold on to him for the rest of his days or the rest of my days,” she says of her love for her grandbaby

  • Hamilton is also a mother to son Dalton Abbott, 35, and daughter Josephine Archer Cameron, 32

Linda Hamilton is just fine being a grandmother of one.

After sharing with PEOPLE in June that she became a grandparent to a “precious” boy in the past year, the Stranger Things and Terminator star, 68, opened up a bit more about taking on the new familial role.

“I have not been sitting around for 20 years hoping for a grandchild — I’m too busy. So there was no pressure, no weight [on my children],” Hamilton tells PEOPLE during a discussion about her new sci-fi action film, Osiris.

“I frankly feel like I’ve just gotten rid of my babies, you know what I mean? I don’t want more babies,” she says of her son Dalton Abbott, 35, and daughter Josephine Archer Cameron, 32, whom she had with her ex-husbands, actor Bruce Abbott and filmmaker James Cameron.

Hamilton adds that her grandson is “just starting to crawl” and that she’s jokingly finding ways to not be asked to babysit or take care of him.

“I started doing things like letting their dog out by accident, wink, wink, and then doing it again and like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry. I just forgot she was here.’ You know what I mean? So they would not give me that grandbaby under any circumstances,” she says. “I’m not desperate to have a baby in my arms.”

Joking aside, Hamilton recalled that she has formed an unexpected bond with her grandson compared to her two children.

“I look into his eyes and I am sitting here going, ‘What the hell is going on?’ There is such a deep connection,” she explains. “When you’re a single mother and a working mother, you don’t remember connection. You barely get them fed and put to bed and then you collapse.”

“Of course, I loved my babies, but there’s something very connected with him and I,” Hamilton continues. “And it really doesn’t have anything to do with, ‘Oh, he’s my legacy,’ or, ‘Oh, he reminds me of my son.’ It’s nothing like that. It’s just like, ‘Oh my God, this little creature.’ ”

“I want to throw my arms around him and protect him from everything,” she adds. “Hold on to him for the rest of his days or the rest of my days.”

Hamilton’s Osiris movie came out on July 25. She can also be seen in Stranger Things’ final season, which will be released in three parts: Vol. 1 on Nov. 26, Vol. 2 on Christmas and the series finale on New Year’s Eve.
