It’s time, Sassenachs. The long awaited Outlander prequel, Blood of my Blood, is finally here. Viewers have only heard bits and pieces about Claire and Jamie Fraser’s parents over the past seven seasons of the original series, and now, the new show will dive deep into those two love stories, set in the early 18th century Scottish Highlands and World War I Europe.
The catalyst of the series is the sudden death of Red Jacob, laird of Clan MacKenzie. A power struggle breaks out between his sons, Colum and Dougal, while their sister, Ellen finds herself entangled in their schemes despite her father’s vow never to marry her off for political gain, as she falls in love with Brian Fraser, a member of a rival clan. Meanwhile, centuries later, a letter written by British soldier Henry Beauchamp is intercepted by Julia Moriston in the British War Office. They strike up a wartime correspondence that eventually turns romantic, only for them to be separated by a tragic accident years later in the Scottish Highlands.
While this show isn’t based on specific books or texts the way that the original series was, the setup and characters do draw inspiration from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander universe. Gabaldon was involved in the making of the show as a writer on two episodes, a consulting producer, and she was on set for filming. She is also currently writing a prequel novel, tentatively titled A Bird In The Hand.
We already know this is just the beginning of this prequel series. Starz announced in June that it was already planning to order a second season. With the main Outlander series ending with its eighth and final season soon, the promise of more Blood of my Blood should keep fans a little more content.
The first episode will premiere on Friday, August 8. Starz will release all episodes weekly on Fridays at 8 p.m. eastern and Pacific in the United States and at 9 p.m. eastern and pacific in Canada.
