More than two dozen At Home stores are set to close by the end of September as the company continues to deal with crippling debt.
The Coppell, Texas-based furniture and home decor retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on June 16, citing “broader economic and retail-specific market pressures,” according to court documents previously obtained by USA TODAY.
In June, At Home initially said it would only be closing 26 stores before revising that number to 24, when it decided to keep two stores open in New Jersey and Wisconsin. The number eventually ballooned to 30 when retail firm Hilco Consumer – Retail said Aug. 1 that additional stores in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, and Utah would be closing.
At Home’s problems come as other brick-and-mortar retailers continue to face problems. This year has seen retailers like Big Lots, Joann Fabrics, Kohl’s, JCPenney, Macy’s, and Party City cutting back their physical footprint or going under altogether. And just this week, mall chain Claire’s said it filed for bankruptcy and tapped 18 Claire’s and Icing stores for closure.
Here is what you need to know about At Home’s closures.
