Kate Middleton is raising awareness about the importance of early childhood again, this time through a series of animated films. The Princess’s Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood has today released a series of seven short videos, with each one explaining an aspect of the importance of nurturing interactions in infancy.

“Early childhood has been recognised as the golden opportunity to build strong foundations for future life health and happiness,” Kate said in a statement marking the films’ launch. “[These films] showcase how adults can create nurturing, loving interactions with children, helping to foster social and emotional development during their earliest years. These core social and emotional skills are essential in forming healthy relationships and are fundamental building blocks that can carry us through life.”

William and Kate’s Foundation established the Centre for Early Childhood in 2021 as a home for her ongoing work with the early years. In January 2023, it launched the Shaping Us campaign, which published a framework earlier this year. As a royal, Kate cannot be seen to be exerting influence politically, so her work in this area has largely focussed around awareness and education campaigns.

“We want to raise the awareness of, and celebrate, the extraordinary value of everyday moments of connection which matter more than ever in a rapidly changing world,” Kate continued in her statement. “Early childhood offers a sacred opportunity to transform our societies for the better and by nurturing these skills in our babies and children, we will be raising a younger generation better equipped to face the future.”

Kensington Palace said that Kate had been involved in the development of the films behind the scenes. Images of her attending a creative briefing in June have today been shared to coincide with the release.

The films are on the Centre for Early Childhood’s YouTube channel. They have been designed for use by people who work with babies, children and families to give them tools to have conversations with parents and caregivers. “The Centre is working with universities, charities and professional bodies to build these films into training and practice around the country,” it said in a statement.

The Princess is currently on a break from royal duties spending time with her family. It is almost one year since she began her gradual return to work after announcing she had finished chemotherapy treatment.
