Piper Perabo is one proud stepmother.
The actress, who stars in the new Prime Video series Butterfly alongside Daniel Dae Kim, spoke with PEOPLE at the thriller’s premiere in New York City on Tuesday, Aug. 5 and opened up about watching her stepdaughter, Lilli Kay, 29, carve out her own path in Hollywood.
Perabo, 48, became a stepmother after marrying husband Stephen Kay in 2014.
“We were both in Yellowstone and we only have one scene together, but Lilli is right now in Stick, which just got picked up for a second season,” Perabo says of her stepdaughter’s role in the Apple TV+ series.

“I’m so proud of her,” the Coyote Ugly alum continues. “She plays a gender nonconforming caddy and I think that show is so great. Owen Wilson is so amazing. It’s one of those summer shows that’s just a gem. I love it so much.”
As for if she’s ever given Lilli any advice, Perabo says she feels like she doesn’t need to since her stepdaughter has “studied a lot.”
“I don’t really need to give her advice,” she explains. “She’s really talented and studied a lot. Lilli is so good. But we read scripts to each other and we talk about work and we’re collaborators.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Perabo spoke about working with Kim again after first appearing together in 2005’s The Cave. “Dan and I did an action movie like 17 years ago and we’ve been friends ever since,” she says. “We work in activism together. We’re just friends in real life.”
Perabo adds, “So when he got [Butterfly], he called me — I was doing a movie in Iceland — and he called me and said, ‘You wanna go to Korea?’ And I was so excited.”
Butterfly premieres on Wednesday, Aug. 13 exclusively on Prime Video.
