Stephen Colbert is about to have a huge gap in his daily schedule. Luckily, Josh Brolin has some great ideas about how he can fill it.

On Monday, Brolin’s Weapons costar Julia Garner paid a visit to Colbert on The Late Show, where they spent a few minutes discussing their mutual friend and his tendency to ramble via video message.

“He can be unpredictable,” Colbert said of Brolin. “He sends me, and I’ve shown some of them on the show, he sends me video messages. Some of them are long.”

Garner replied, “He does that to you too? I thought I was the only one.”

The duo explained that Brolin’s videos tend to be “anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes long,” usually involve him driving somewhere, and include plenty of pauses since he’s talking off the cuff.

Colbert quipped, “I always feel bad because it takes me a while to send one back — ’cause I have a job.”

Garner then shared that ahead of her Late Show visit, Brolin sent her with a special message to play for Colbert.

“Stephen, it’s Josh. Be nice to our girl,” Brolin began. “She’s a really sweet girl and she’s really, really good in this movie. I hope you saw the movie. And also I want to say, how’s your boat? Now that you don’t have a job, you’ll be able to spend more time on the boat.”

Poking fun at news that Colbert’s Late Show is set to end in May, he then offered another suggestion for how the comedian could spend his newfound free time: “Watch the f—ing Goonies, man,” Brolin demanded.

Laughing at the request, Colbert joked, “That’s the shortest message I’ve ever gotten from him.”

This isn’t the first time Brolin has put Colbert on blast for his lack of Goonies knowledge. During a 2022 visit to the show, Brolin was shocked to learn that Colbert has never watched the ’80s classic that marked his breakthrough role.

“Oh, come on dude. Ever? You’re the one?,” the actor asked at the time.

When Colbert defended himself, claiming he was “just a little too old” for the movie when it debuted, Brolin responded, “There is no ‘too old’ for Goonies. There’s generation after generation… so sad.”

Colbert eventually promised to check it out, telling his friend, “I’m going to watch it and call you up after.”

If Brolin is to be believed, Colbert has yet to deliver on his promise. But perhaps that’s about to change.

Late last month, CBS announced that The Late Show With Stephen Colbert would conclude next May, ending the franchise — which began with David Letterman in 1993 — after 33 years on the air. Though some speculate otherwise, the network said its decision to pull the plug on the franchise was “purely a financial one” and that it wasn’t “related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

Colbert graciously addressed the cancellation news on his show, thanking CBS, viewers, and all the Late Show band and staff for their support over the years. Several of his pals and fellow late-night hosts have since spoken out against the decision.

But on the bright side, Colbert will soon have time to catch up on his ’80s coming-of-age comedies — and finally respond to all of Brolin’s long video messages.
