Shakira opened up about her hair journey at the launch party of her new haircare line Isima
The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer launched Isima on July 6 at Ulta
Shakira said she launched the line because she was tired of trying products that “didn’t deliver”
Shakira’s hair journey has been nothing short of a learning curve.
At the launch party for her first-ever haircare line, Isima, on Thursday, July 31, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer opened up about her lengthy hair journey — which inspired the new endeavor.
“You know me as a singer, you know me as a dancer, as a mother, but underneath all those layers there’s a woman who struggles with the same struggles that you all have. Especially hair,” Shakira, 48, said in a speech at the party, which was held at Casita Hollywood.
She added, “I always say that my hair has a mind of its own. The real diva here is my hair because it’s pretty temperamental.”
Before Shakira created Isima, her hair went through “so much drama” and change.

“I’ve been brunette. Then I decided to become blonde, because I heard that blondes have more fun. Don’t know about that,” Shakira joked. “Then I went to red. Then I went back to blonde.”
She continued, “First I was wavy, then my hair totally changed to curly, then I became a mother. I lost a lot of hair, then I got it back.”
The “Whenever, Wherever” singer — who said she was “so tired of trying things that didn’t deliver” — began working on Isima four years ago and revealed the news in a June 10 Instagram post. In the caption section she wrote the brand was “born out of my own experiences and nurtured for years.”

“I didn’t want to create just any hair care line,” she said at the event. “I wanted something with real meaning, something that celebrates us, that celebrates women, complex women like me, and that honors who we really are.”
“Isima is a brand that is rooted in science but also in culture and identity and especially diversity,” she continued.

The “Waka Waka” singer concluded, “If I had a dime for every time I went to the beauty salon and left crying because someone burned my hair… Yes, that’s the story of my life.”
Isima launched exclusively at Ulta Beauty on July 6. The first collection features eight products that focus on the scalp, cortex and cuticle, addressing frizz, dryness and damage.
Shakira is currently on the road for her Las Mujeras Ya No Lloran World Tour. Up next, she’ll perform a show in Los Angeles on Aug. 5, before playing a show in Fresno on Aug. 7. Then, Shakira will embark on the Latin American leg of her tour.
