Becky Lynch is dredging up the past!
The seven-time WWE women’s world champion made a snarky reference to Nikki Bella’s former engagement to John Cena as the pair kicked off a new rivalry over the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship on the Monday, Aug. 4 episode of Monday Night Raw.
Lynch and the returning WWE Hall of Famer took shots at one another during an in-ring promo that quickly turned personal, when the current WWE Women’s Intercontinental champion made what announcers called a “cheap shot” reference to Bella, 41, and her former relationship with Cena, 48.
The pair argued over their stance as two of the most decorated women’s wrestlers in WWE history before Lynch bragged about having a role in Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2, while alleging Bella had her role “cut” from the final version of the film. Bella called Lynch a “liar,” which set the current champion off.

“You are a liar just like your husband,” Bella told Lynch, referencing her husband and current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins.
“Do not talk about me and my hot husband,” Lynch fired back.
“Me and my hot husband are the greatest wrestling couple of all-time,” she said, before referencing Cena by his WWE catchphrase. “Wait a minute, at one point that would’ve been you and your — oh wait, you can’t see him anymore!”
The crowd erupted, chanting “holy s—!” over the scripted back-and-forth while Bella played along, looking shocked and shaking her head. “Oh wow,” the two-time women’s world champion said off mic.
Bella admitted Lynch is “one of the greatest of all time” in the WWE ring, but challenged “The Man” to a match for the championship — likely to come at WWE’s next premium live event “Clash in Paris” on Aug. 31. The segment ended with Lynch sucker-punching Bella in the mouth before running out of the ring, playing up her role as the “heel” in their storyline.
Bella’s highly publicized relationship came to an end in April 2018 when the couple announced they had called off their engagement less than a month away from their wedding. Cena initially proposed to Bella after they won a mixed-tag team match at WrestleMania 33 in April 2017.
The couple first began dating in 2012, while their relationship became the focus of several WWE storylines as well as a primary focus of E!’s reality programs Total Divas and Total Bellas.
Bella later married Artem Chigvintsev, who she met while appearing on Dancing with the Stars before divorcing last September amid domestic abuse allegations against the Russian dancer. Cena later married Shay Shariatzadeh in October 2020.
