Shedeur Sanders is speaking out, one week after his dad Deion revealed he had bladder cancer
The Cleveland Browns rookie is among five quarterbacks who are trying to make the team
Deion revealed last week that he had not previously told his sons about his diagnosis
Shedeur Sanders is fine with dad Deion keeping his distance.
“I don’t want him coming to see me right now because I want to get to where I want to go, then for him to see me,” Sanders, 23, told reporters at training camp on Monday, Aug. 4.
The Cleveland Browns rookie is currently vying for a roster spot along with four other quarterbacks: veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, third-round pick Dillon Gabriel, and Tyler Huntley, who was added to training camp on Monday because Pickett and Gabriel are injured.
Sanders comments came as he spoke to the media for the first time since his father revealed that he has been dealing with bladder cancer.
Despite his diagnosis, Deion recently made time to visit another son, Shilo, at his training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ESPN reported.

Still, the former Colorado signal-caller isn’t ready for Prime Time.
“I don’t want him to come and see me get a couple reps, and he is cheering like a good dad,” Shedeur said. “Like, nah, you can’t be proud of me right now. I got to get to where I’m going, and I know it’s a lot I got to do to get there.”

He added, “It’s kind of like I just want everything that I’m doing is just focus on this time, and I don’t want no distractions because we know how the media, we know how everybody would take it and take away from the team, just from him being my own dad showing up. So, it is a gift and a curse at the same time.”
For Deion, who turns 58 on Saturday, the past summer has had its highs and lows, as he’s recovered from surgery to remove his bladder and adapt to his new life. While the rumor mill swirled with few details about his condition, the former Dallas Cowboys star sequestered at his estate in Texas where he fished and spent time with his other children, including Deion Sanders Jr. and daughter Shelomi.
On Monday, Shedeur reflected on how his father’s diagnosis — and what little he has known about it — has impacted his first training camp in the NFL.
“It’s definitely stay focused mentally,” Shedeur said of his current goal. “Dad, he’s one person that he’ll handle his, we handle what we got to. So, it was something that we really ain’t even have a formal conversation about because, it was like, ‘Y’all need to focus on what y’all can focus on. Can’t sit here and feel sorry for me, and then that’s affecting y’all doing that.’ “
