(The Center Square) – After opening the state’s first Department of Motor Vehicles facility with expanded services outside of the Chicago area, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says more DMV+ locations are planned across the state.

Giannoulias and Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen cut the ribbon Monday at the Champaign DMV+.

Giannoulias said the facility will be especially helpful for driver’s license reinstatements, adoption-related documents, certified copies of business records and international business for foreign use certification.

“Because of the sensitive nature of these documents, digital and online services are not possible, so an in-person visit before today was required to be done in our offices in either downtown Chicago or in Springfield,” Giannoulias said.

The secretary said the DMV+ utilizes a one-stop-shop design that involves cross-training employees to accommodate customers seeking all DMV tasks, including driver services and vehicle services.

Feinen welcomed the renovated facility and expanded services in Champaign.

“As an attorney who has tried to access the services that are only in Springfield and Chicago, I’ve been one of the ones who has dealt with the time tax of having to drive back and forth to take care of business operations for my clients,” Feinen said.

Giannoulias was asked if expanded services were planned at DMV locations in other cities.

“Yes, the ultimate goal is for all our major facilities to have these. It does take work and time. Our goal is to get every DMV, to transform them to DMV+,” Giannoulias said.

According to the Illinois Secretary of State’s website, the Budget and Fiscal Management Department manages the Secretary of State’s annual budget of $884 million as approved by the General Assembly.
