NEED TO KNOW

  • Looking Through Water‘s cast includes Michael Douglas and his son Cameron Douglas, as well as Michael Stahl-David, David Morse, Walker Scobell, Ximena Romo and Tamara Tunie

  • The family drama is adapted from the novel by Bob Rich, who tells PEOPLE it’s about “how people lose their way and find their way back to each other”

  • Watch the movie’s newly released trailer, shared exclusively with PEOPLE, before its Sept. 12 release

In his new movie, Michael Douglas has a special connection with a costar: his real-life son Cameron.

Looking Through Water, adapted from Bob Rich’s 2015 novel, stars Michael Stahl-David as William, a New York executive joining a father-son fishing tournament in San Pedro, Belize, with his estranged dad Leo, played by David Morse.

Michael, 80, plays an older William, telling the story in flashbacks to his grandson (Percy Jackson and the Olympians star Walker Scobell) on a fishing trip of their own that’s full of reflection.

“I’m 75 years old, I just want to fish,” says Morse’s character in the newly released trailer.

“There are more important things in life, father,” Stahl-David — glimpsed on romantic outings with Ximena Romo — tells him. “Happiness is on that list,” responds Morse.

Cameron, 46, plays Cole, a man closer to Leo who’s at odds with William. “You two need to bury the hatchet, at least for one day,” Tamara Tunie, who plays Miss Reno, can be heard scolding them.

“This movie has heart,” Rich tells PEOPLE of the Looking Through Water adaptation. “To see the characters from my book now having their adventure on the screen has been a real treat.”

Two universal themes that guided his novel and now the “vibrant” Roberto Sneider–directed, Zach Dean– and Rowdy Herrington–scripted movie are “family relationships and the wonder of nature,” says the author.

“I was interested in exploring how people lose their way and find their way back to each other. It’s kind of a thrill to now see that play out on screen,” he says. “I think audiences will recognize something of themselves in these characters.”

Michael shares Cameron with his ex-wife Diandra Luker; the Oscar winner and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones also share son Dylan and daughter Carys.

‘Looking Through Water’

After starring in last year’s biographical miniseries Franklin, Michael indicated in a May 2025 interview with Deadline that he is taking time away from acting to focus on running his production company Further Films and his personal life. Among the Ant-Man star’s upcoming projects is the miniseries Reagan & Gorbachev.

Cameron, known for his starring roles in Wonder Boys and The Runner, last appeared onscreen with his father back in 2003: It Runs in the Family starred Michael, his son, his father Kirk and mother Diana.

Looking Through Water is in theaters Sept. 12.
